ZFs make them like that, they shift weird when cold to raise temperatures or something. It's not grinding it self at 300ftlbs 99% of the time. Drove my neighbors 328xi and many other 3 series like I said, and they all shift blotchly. I'm pretty sure the V6 camry has more power than a 328 yet shifts better.

Why are we comparing it to GM transmissions

My ZF 6sp in my old 335i was clunky when cold but once it was warmed up was fine. Same with the new ZF 8sp in my X1. As well as all of the 328i ZF 8sp loaners i've had. My father's ZF 7speed in his E350 does the same thing, albeit not as pronounced. The same shift behavior is in the charger 8speed rental I have right now....

I'm going to give it a flush with Redline D4 soon and then flash over with the Alpina B3 a little bit later. I'm sure the transmission is capable of greatness but it's quite sad as it is. Software plus lack of quality control. There's quite a few people over on E90post that have reported similar feelings, one said after replacing his seals/adapters and the solenoids in his 335i it drives much better. Some say the ZF 6AT is super smooth. I'm going to give it a shot, I've got a warranty.

The F30 328xi 8SP I had for a while would shift perfectly at times and super quick at times and horrible at times. All within the same drive, without much of a difference in driving style. All the things I point out are after the warm up period for the transmission.

Also I think without getting too technical everyone has different considerations of what is smooth and fine, some of the people that ride with me don't notice the things I'm pointing out. I tend to feel every shift in every car though. Lexus has some great ones, but you can still feel them, but you have to look for it, its quick and just a click as opposed to the nudge the 335i gives or sometimes jerks, and slow transitions.

The F30 8SP I drove was super quick though, when it wanted to be. Is the 7 speed a dual clutch?

Negative, its a traditional auto. BMW and Chrysler/Dodge put it in everything now. Its a quite nice unit. I used to have a VW DSG before the 335i so I know what the difference is. I really never ever thinking my 335i was clunky or jerky in anyway. Same with my new X1. When its cold thats a very different story, but it goes away very quickly and its much worse in the winter than the summer.

That's what they get for killing the manual option that the TSX/TL used to have. Seriously, does anyone build a decent automatic tranny?

Honestly there are more than a few really good automatics out there now a days.

Ford's 6r80 is pretty awesome trans. GM's 6L80 is also really good.. Their new 8 speed is shaping up to be damn good too, and I don't even like GM's.

Acura isn't having much luck with auto transmissions on their v6 models. I know the 3G TL had auto tranny issues as well. Wonder if the 4G had issues too?
