The upcoming RDX will be accord based too, along with the coupe. I guess it's a good platform
I guess Acura is continuing the tradition of offering gussied up Accords
Meh - the average consumer does not know that (Aside from styling, which is very subjective), the RL is lightyears ahead of the accord in ever category
Including being an Accord!
I'm sorry but your average consumer doesn't buy an RL anywho.
Honda talks all this BS about how great the handling is... but I highly doubt they can put a dent in BMW or Audi's sales with that. A 5series BMW or A6 or even Infiniti will get those customers before Acura does unless they are hardcore Honda lovers.
Facts do help. When it comes down to it, people vote with their wallets. And its no surprise that in the US Lexus and BMW lead the way. Their cars are class leading for what they want to accomplish- luxury and sport respectively.
However there is no question that Acura has found a very comfortable segment while doing a good job of improving their brand from the dolldrums of the mid-90s. Acura has the largest sales increase from 2003 of any luxury manufactuer (16% increase).
YTD for luxury car sales (over 30K), Lexus leads at 209,000 sold, BMW at 191,237 sold, Cadillac at 169,445 sold, MB at 157,559 sold, and Acura at 146,5000.
Infiniti sold 96,179 and Audi 57,299.
The last generation TL was a great car and a great value and the current TL builds upon that. There are clearly plenty of people who choose it for its merits and value without the need for a badge. The new RL will easily hit its sales goals because again there are plenty of folks who will see it for a great value vs. its price competitors E320 and 530.
Acura has great positive momentum as a manufactuer and no doubt we'll see some great cars from them over the next 5 years- hopefully pushing even further upscale.
Contrast this to MB and Audi who are both currently losing sales and seem a bit lost.
