Completely different cars there..

Not they aren't. Same class, same price, same size, similar power outputs.

It just so happens that the M45 does it the right way...V8 + RWD

Hmm, I always thought the M45 was a compact sedan since the backseat was so small..but I guess it's closer to a mid-sized sedan whereas the RL is a fullsized sedan.

Just when I thought nobody could do worse, you did.

There's nothing wrong with not being able to have the same cachet as MB or BMW. I think Acura fits a good and profitable niche of semi-luxury cars. Someone has to fill that void and if they can make interesting cars that fit or almost fit the bill, more power to them.

I agree.
Acura is not BMW, Mercedes-Benz or even Lexus, but it doesn't have to be either.
I love the TL, the TSX and I drive an RSX. I even like the MDX. They make some fine offerings. The RL has never sold and this iteration probably won't do much better at that price point either.

It sold when it was called the Legend

Yeah, I like the looks of the new RL but I'd rather have a legend with a nice 6-speed and 3rd pedal Those were nice cars.

can anyone tell me how this AWD system is any different than that used on the high end EVO?

The evo only has an electronic center diff for the front-rear distribution. The RL has front rear and left right, front and rear.

As for the cries about no V8, the RL makes as much HP as the MB E500 and costs thousands less.

That being said, Honda/Acura would have been better off building just a RWD RL that costs 5K less. But the platform doesn't allow for that since it has a traversely mounted engine.

If you know the difference between transverse and longitudal, you should know the difference between HP coming from a V8 and a V6.

I think the RL will sell well.
And I agree that does nothing for Acura's brand image.

I believe the RL can also spin up to 100% of the power to the left or right wheels as opposed to just front and back like regular AWD systems.

Its very similar to ATTS on the Prelude SH with the exception that the Prelude was FWD only.

on top gear they said that the special edition evo (one that probably isn't over here) they were driving could put all of its torque through one wheel.

being cheaper than every other luxury marque isn't going to help their image either

That's incorrect.

It's 70:30 (front:rear) or vice versa, and then 100% of that 70% to left/right so at most it could put 70% of power to one wheel if I understand their specs correctly.

Who cares about the AWD. The old ladies driving it won't know the difference. It looks too pedestrian.

I believe acuras fill the niche for the sensible upscale buyer that doesnt wanna be like everyone else and buy a benz; someone who wants to spend more than hondas but want good value for their buck.

Not german
No V8
No logo

I dont think Honda will ever be in the same class as Benz/Audi/BMW

That's cool cause it's not. That distinction goes to the GS300 which is 10K less than the RL.

Having gotten a 2004 TL for a loaner this last week I can state that it's a very nice and solid car, and one I wouldn't mind having. Acura makes extremely nice and well-designed cars but they don't offer the same halo effect to their owners as other luxury makes, Acura doesn't have even close to the same cachet as Lexus or the German brands and the new RL isn't going to change that.
