Ad blockers are biting the dust

This is for Chrome on PC - first was uBlock Origin which suddenly wasn't supported anymore. Now AdBlock / Adblock Plus can't properly skip ads in Youtube (has a Skip Ad button requirement). What's left out there that still works? They're getting smarter against these ad blockers...

And from what I've seen, the whole-house DNS solutions don't work anymore either.

Firefox and ublock origin still working fine for me, i'm also running a host file that's blocking a metric shitload of places, haven't setup my pihole yet but the day will come.

I'd do FF but I like the native Google/Chrome sync across to my Android phone and even other PCs... history, URLs, logins, etc. Gave up Opera & FF a long time ago for it.

I use ublock origin with Chrome, whats the issue exactly?

Are you no longer able to download it from the App store or something?

I know google has been busy crippling the framework for ad blocking. Maybe its time to move to firefox.

I think the problem more likely is that websites (specifically mega-ones like Google with YouTube) are becoming more sophisticated with their coding where it's hard to block the Ad in YouTube without also blocking the content you want to see.

I tried to lookup ways to block Ads on Hulu and it didn't look easy or even real possible even if I were to go for something like PiHole via DNS. I think most people could find are ways to block the video - but it still sits there for the 90 second duration with just a blank screen

You can now do Firefox Sync on your iOS and Android devices as well. It just requires installing the Firefox app on your devices.

I know... switching is still a pain, especially because it seems like almost every web site out there now sees the new web browser login as a potential hacking attempt and will give you a 2FA challenge before you can log in. Migrating your bookmarks is the easy step... actually getting all those sites to log in is not as fun.

I've never not used firefox. Everything works for me. Running software from an ad company is against policy.

I got the blank screen on YT as well. I've also noticed that news sites like NYT have ad blocking firewalls. You can't even read the story without unblocking the site. I get it though. They depend on ad revenue.

Stop using Spyware for a browser. There are several others. Opera, Vivaldi and Brave are all built on the same platform. But overall, SeaMonkey rules!!!

Even for mobile devices, AdBlock and DuckDuckGo both have their own browsers.

Firefox with ublock origin works well and never see youtube ads anywhere.

On my phone (android 10) I use youtube vanced and it does the same, never an ad. The mid video ads are the worst especially if you're watching a music video and have it cranked. There is no fade cut, no warning it just starts. And if it's a quiet part and some dumb ad blasts, it's ridiculous.

Chrome on Mac with uBlock Origin is still working fine on Youtube. But Safari on Mac with AdGuard is no longer working on Youtube.

Hmm, reinstalled and so far so good. I recall about less than a year ago it was just disabled in Chrome one day and I couldn't get it to work anymore. Thought it finally met its maker.

I may as well throw my phone in the garbage, right after I cut the sim card in half.

Well do the math as some might say.

What is Google's revenue source - - - advertising

What company is behind Chrome - - - Google

DoH!

I use Adblocker Ultimate on my primary browser Firefox and so far it's still handling Google and YouTube okay. In the last week or so YouTube has changed. Almost all videos now generate a playback error and pop up a message that the video can't be played. However, that's just the ad video being blocked. Once it waits 10 seconds or so the blocked ad cycles off and the original video opens.

I do run into the odd site that seems to be able to know I have an adblocker and won't let me further. I have a feeling that trend will grow. I wonder if there is an extension to just make the browser lie about what extensions you have installed when a site has a script to check.

NoScript usually blocks those issues on most sites for me last I saw and if not then unless it's vital I never visit the site again.

I use script blocker ultimate and can toggle blocking on and off at a whim, works great for those pop under messages asking to whitelist.
