ad(s).* screwing up IE "back" functionality

Is there any way to restore consistent "back" functionality to IE when it seems all of the ad services constantly screw up that function? I've already tried using a hosts file, which helps block on-page ads (but also screws up referral links at times) and still experience this problem quite often when using the back button of IE or the mapped "back" button on my mouse.

Worst offender for me seems to be Yahoo, where I see ads.yahoo.com and ad.wsod.com more often then not listed as the sites I seem to visit "between" the pages I am actually visiting.

Any thoughts on how to address this without making browsing an absolute PITA? Preferably solutions that actually function within IE.

Bet if U allow more cookies, like third party, it could help. No harm in trying that. But I wouldn't; I would just get and run Pale Moon and restore happiness.

If you are just wicked crazy about IE, and can but have not, I would update to 11. But with yr system, bet that's wut yr already running.

If you right click on the "back" arrow you can select previously visited pages in the order you viewed them. If you click back and get hung up stop and then right click...usually it will let you go back far enough to avoid the hang up. I have gotten into the habit of not clicking back and all and just going straight to the right click. Hope that helps.

manage addons, tracking protection. which of course is built in to IE, errr, you have to go get them from msft.

Might want to hold on the default internet hate for IE, this happens with other browsers, too.

I believe U. And I retain IE, tho PM is my default browser, and 11 is actually not terrible.

I use the backspace key a lot not the back button on the browser. A lot because I am using a wireless keyboard that is a bit smaller with fewer keys. I also set it up to delete the history every time I close it.

I do too. Use backspace key. All the time, in fact. Never had a problem in IE, but in Pale Moon, I often have to give temp permission to run scripts. that, is a good thing.

Also good to clear the DNS cache. Forget, keeping the system malware free and free of unwanted toolbars.

As mentioned already try adblock plus for IE, should even work fine within enhanced protected mode (which you remembered to enable right? I forget if it defaults to on in IE11). I don't use IE11 that much (mainly just Netflix here because of html5) but I can't say I've ever had a problem like you've described... then again Netflix doesn't really have ads.

Did you post that from a phone or something?

I hate to break it to you but IE11 actually isn't terrible. It's more secure than Firefox or Pale Moon and speed isn't really an issue for it anymore either. You are sort of restricted on the plugin front though (even more so with enhanced protected mode) but the major players should still work fine (flash, adblock). Easylist also has a tracking prevention list for IE.

Well the latter should go without saying but the former sounds like some voodoo magic (aka placebo) nonsense.

I have protected mode in IE set to Med-High, with tracking protection and do not track requests activated. Cookie handling is set to reject all third-party cookies and ask about the rest, except I think session cookies.

I'm running Malwarebytes Pro, in addition to Windows Defender. MBPro has malicious site blocking active.

Generally, I keep everything up to date.

Easy privacy and google blocking add-ons are installed.

I'll consider installing ad-block if that's the consensus, although it's getting nearly ridiculous with all these settings/tweaks/installs just to achieve a smooth browsing experience with a modicum of safety/privacy...

For the the highest level of mitigation you have to go to the advanced tab and enable "Enhanced protected mode" and "64-bit processes for enhanced protected mode." The second one may not be available depending on your OS. The latter will use AppContainers for tabs even on the desktop for Windows 8+.

I don't think it's any more or less than with chrome. Adblock Plus and HTTPS everywhere are pretty much all you need.

Had the first one selected already, just enabled the second as well. It apparently requires a restart which I'll do in a bit, but here's an example of the issue as it presented just now when I clicked on a stock in my Yahoo portfolio to view its summary page:
