Well it was absurd. The other absurdity is the price of the 4080 (the real one) which shouldn't be more than $1000 based on how small/weak it is compared to the 4090.

What a launch. EVGA is feeling justified now.

LOLOLOLOLOL that is quite a backpedal. Just wow....

I'm guessing they've actually realized just how big of a price gap they've left for RDNA3 to come in and are now getting nervous especially after all the community backlash and less than stellar DLSS3.0 reviews. They're probably going to wait and see RDNA3 MSRP and adjust their pricing accordingly.

Or my more cynical take: it allows more time for them to sell off 3090 overstock.
This too...

Assuming they are just going to change the name to 4070 Ti and do nothing else, it would still probably take some time to validate any bios changes and print new boxes and stuff.

When they launch it again, I would think they would also be free to price it differently and say something nice dystopian like "The 4070 was always $599" and just never acknowledge the 4080 12GB ever again.

The joke will be on all of us when they call it the "4080 GS" and don't even both to change the price.

Then they certainly can slap GS stickers on everything

I can't tell if it's a backpedal or they're just giving us the finger.

What, you don't want it? YOU DON'T GET IT!

Obviously, they are still going to ship the cards, just with a name change.

Maybe some evil joker and NVidia is just going to change only the name.

"We heard you didn't like the name, so we changed it: Behold the 4070Ti for only $899".

The mythical 4080 12gb has done it's job: it made the $1600 (really $2000-$3000 with AIB pricing) 4090 look like a damn good deal even with the fear of a softening market.

Now that they've hooked the whales, it's time to tuck it away and bring it back as a 4070 to buoy the post holiday sales slump some time out in March of next year or something.

Computerbase recompiled some benchmarks using the latest Geforce drivers, which nets Ampere some decent gains in CPU limited situations (e.g. CPU bottlenecked games and game in general at lower resolutions). Note that the 4090 does not benefit because it was tested on a non-public driver which looks to have the optimizations in place. So now reviewers either re-test their suite with the latest driver, or what's likely going to happen is that the launch reviews largely stay the same and the 4090 looks better in relation to the 3090 and 3090 Ti than it really is. Can't say I'm surprised that Nvidia did this... It's underhanded, but it has always about the optics for them.

Called it.

I knew they'd do this. Intel and AMD, like any other conglomerate, are scum, but holly hell, nVidia absolutely takes the cake on consumer manipulation and exploitation.

You just don't release a public driver (v522) that boosts across the board 1 day after 3rd party has already reviewed 4090 with the non-public review kit driver (v521) and the older lineup with v517 or older for no reason.

PS: Bless ComputerBase, doing the Tech Lord's work. They almost constantly impress with their work and ethics.

LOL. Makes sense though. The cash grab was too much even for nvidia.

I assume, at least, that it'll launch with a lower price as well.
Or my more cynical take: it allows more time for them to sell off 3090 overstock.
And more positive take that's not mutually exclusive with that: They saw 7700 XT and/or RX 7800 XT will blow that joke SKU out of the water in price/performance.

NV still not getting it, it is the absurd prices of 4080 that make users angry. So now are we expecting 4080Ti 20GB selling for $1400?

The only thing absurd about the price is that it wasn't higher. Gamers lined up around the block to throw nearly $2000 at Nvidia for the 4090. The 4080 16GB will cost around $13-1500 and even more gamers will flood the streets for that. If the 4070 costs $8-900, gamers will rush out to buy that as well. I'm getting sick of complaining and pissing in the wind about prices when the massive increases don't seem to bother anyone. Fine. Screw it then. A high end GPU is $2000 now and a mid range is $1000. Whatever.

Aside from seeing how badly their rep was being tarnished by a card thats not even been released, they also knew that AMD has a high potential to screw them with an equivalent card at a lower price. Better to withdraw that rip-off card now than be utterly humiliated with AMDs response to it.

Now what remains is to adjust the price of the 4080 16gb to under $1k.

The NotAnAppleFan youtuber had an amusing rant along this line yesterday. Gamers get what they deserve. I think the real test will be if the demand/supply keeps up in the next 2-4 weeks. No doubt Nvidia will be controlling supply to push up demand for 4090 or to sell off the old stuff.

I'll bet Jensen was behind this hare-brained idea to name the the 12gb card a 4080. He may be a brilliant engineer, but a lousy marketing guy. Good he's come to his senses and unlaunched the damn thing.

Sadly, I agree with this. People here have said how the 4090 is such a great deal for only $1600. Nvidia has just conditioned people, it's pretty amazing. It's also sad that people are conditioned so bad that they would never buy a card from AMD. There's always something. Someone here basically posted that not having DLSS 3.0 is a deal breaker lol.

However, I've sadly seen it in other things of interest that I have as well, where higher-end stuff used to cost $500 and now things have ballooned to 3-4 thousand easily, and now $1000 is sometimes seen as a great deal, and companies call their $500 "entry-level".

Nvidia are just terrible. I expect to see their shills say how this is great for us and how we should appreciate the performance they've given the 3k series. I assume that the improvements were ready months ago.
