Yes, it's possible to have it, and as for "what to take", a doctor should be consulted.

Being 24 with ADD I can tell you it still is possible (was diagnosed at 22).

It sucks. And Internet access at work does not help.

You needa see a shrink to get a scrip for drugs (Ritalin and/or Celexa work best for me). Another doctor has suggested Adderol instead of Ritalin though.

Damn is ADHD what I have? I always thought it was just an uncontrollable addiction to ATOT.

This really sucks. Shows America's true drug dependence.

ADD doesn't always have to be treated with drugs. Try to work on self-control. If all else fails then drugs may be the only option. I wish that wasn't the first thing people jumped to though. It's just like, I'm depressed, better get some Prozac.

Work on little things to develop self control. Like forcing yourself to concentrate on something for as long as possible. Then see if you can increase the amount of time each time you do it. Also you can attempt to ignore distractions for as long as possible. Shutdown all web browsers and refuse to open them until lunch, or something along those lines.

The truth is, there is no easy solution. Drugs all have side-effects. I have dyslexia and as far as I know there aren't any wonder drugs for that. I just learned to deal with it. I think I've done pretty well, as I am less than a year from a Phd in mechanical engineering.

<--21, and still got it. I take Ritalin sometimes, mainly around test times only.

I STRONGLY reccomend a exercise program. People have told me that diet helps, I don't belive it. I really think that a regular exercise program DOES HELP. (Running, Biking, etc.) Not soo much of a weighlifting routine, but something strenously active.

I always thought I had ADHD, and perhaps still do to an extent (I'm 23), but more recently have come to the conclusion that its lack of motivatin. I used to always get bored with homework after 10 minutes but if its something I wanted to do, like playing a video game, working on a website, etc. I could zone in for hours which made me think it was a cop out and my own lack of self-dicipline.

amazing how we just need ritalin to make us all feel better. Its stupid, kids who are wild and desctructive dont need medicine, they need punishment.

iamwiz82..........I'll be curious to see if your attitude changes if you ever have a child who has ADD.

Punishment is not going to change a chemical imbalance in the brain.

hmmm... this "chemical imbalance" just appeared over the last 5 years? I find that hard to believe. Why was this not documented 50 years ago?

so true, my foster sister takes all kinds of medicine for that, all she needs is to get her butt warmed when shes bad. but some do need it due to chemical imbalances...

I have been forcing myself to concetrate, its hard but it works, just sometimes its a lot harder for me to.... i dont really want to take medicine for it.

We once had people stand outside to watch a atom bomb being set off, at the time it was considered safe. I think we know better now.

as recently as the late 60's we could watch TV commercials featuring doctors telling us that lighting up a Chesterfield was the way to relieve the stress of the workday.

Your attitude would suggest to me that you also favor punishing the mentally ill as well.........

perhaps you would like to try a bit of research on the subject before you put forth your solution to the problem

ADHD is being overdiagnosed almost certainly but it is a valid mental illness. Not to the degree that some doctors are prescribing medicine at (so I've heard from various other medical sources), but it is a valid disorder.

Once again, docotors have pushed ADD on anyone who comes in with a problem, not only those who need it. Hell, it was pushed on my girlfriend by her uncle, because it "feels good."

I thin kwe need to reevaluate who should get it. Too many kids have it, and i would venture to guess that some parents are using their children to get the drug.

I'm with Skoorb.

I thought I had it too, as a lot of times I can only concentrate for short periods of time, then I take a break. Really, it was just that I really had to *force* myself to do something I really didn't want to do, and I couldn't sustain that for long. I do wish I could stop my addiction to trying to do 20 things at once.

never finishing projects (getting gung ho at the beginning, getting bored and quitting them), fidgetting, procrastination, irritability. All symptoms.

They are also symptoms of depression. Again, a doc is needed for true evaluation.

Excersize *does* help. Not like lifting, but cardivascular stuff like basketball, raquetball, tennis, football, golf (not cardivascular, but helps concentration), swimming... Stuff like Pool, darts, etc usually don't help me (make it worse). Computers are bad too. Too easy to goof off.

It is *possible* to do it with mind power alone, but it is *very* difficult. The medicines *do* help, but some of them do have side-effects (sexual disfunction, stomach aches, headaches, I got twitches from something).

There's a popular book out on ADD called Driven To Distraction (i dunno who it's by). It's about Adult ADD. if you wanna know more, or if you wanna post stuff and actually have an educated opinion (not just one that has to be --but never is-- qualified with "in my experience..."0, i suggest you read this book.

that said, the disorder is over-diagnosed.

it IS possible for the symptoms to appear later in life; this is because, as a child, you are given a highly structured environment with few choices about what you might be doing. as an adult, and as you grow more reflective, you lose that routine, unless you are able to create it for yourself -- which is something INCREDIBLY difficult for someone with ADD to do. also, a bout of depression can set off someone's propensity for ADD because as your willpower dwindles, so does your ability to maintain structure in your life.

so, yes sometimes just punishing a kid will contain his ADD, but it will surface later, if/when that structure is no longer a given.

"read the book"

ADD is really just a result of bad parenting. No drugs are required, just hit the bastard when it misbehaves, as per the South Park episode.

AaronP agrees with me, as do the writers of South Park.
