LOL @ all of ATOT's armchair dog owners.

These are both young dogs and are working line dogs. I'm not going to leave two working line puppies roaming free in my house while I'm not home. At best they would end up destroying something, at worst they would end up killing themselves by chewing on an electrical wire.

It makes no difference to the dog if it sleeps inside or outside when you aren't home. Once they are more mature i'll let them sleep inside at night, but I'm never going to put them inside when I am not home.

I spend more time with my dogs than most people. I train with them for 4 hours every saturday and sunday, and for at least an hour every day. One of them does search and rescue work, and the other does protection work.

Simply letting your dog inside does not constitute spending time with it. I wager that I spend more quality time with my dogs than any person on this forum.

Until you've owned a real, working line dog though, you probably wouldn't get it.

You would be incorrect. Even allowing your dog to sleep in the same room as you is bonding time for the dog.

In regards to destroying the house, training and exercise does wonders.

I'm inclined to take advice from our trainer, who has 20 years of training and breeding german shepherds for police work over the ATOT collective , but thanks anyway.

How would you know if i'm home or not. My dogs spend about 20 hours a day out there. The only time I bring them inside is if I'm watching TV in the evening.

I'm also only planning on leaving the atot account up for like a half hour since it wrecks my internet connection.

No one said to let them in when you were not home.

Your holier-than-thou attitude is uncalled for since you provided incorrect or incomplete information about your dogs and your habits.

Experienced trainers are like assholes, everyones got one.

Also, not all experienced trainers agree with each other on training methodology.

Cesar Milan has been a dog trainer for 20+ years and I think he sucks.

If he's telling you to leaving them in your garage for 20 hours a day is okay, I'd find a new trainer.

MotionMan (Owner of two "real" dogs.)

My holier than thou attitude is completely called for because

1) I am not obligated to tell you how I raise my dogs, provide you with complete, or even factual information on how I raise my dogs.
2) I know more about MY two dogs than anyone here
3) Someone on ATOT trying to make suggestions when they weren't requested or needed. IMAGINE THAT

But leave it to ATOT to turn a thread with a webcam of two dogs into a thread telling me that I should be leaving my two adolescent dogs in the house unsupervised when they know nothing about them. I thought I made it pretty clear that when I am in the house and able to supervise them, they are in with me, and that is generally about 4 hours a day. If I'm making dinner, cleaning, etc..., they are out in the yard or in the garage where I don't need to supervise them. All the training and exercise in the world won't stop a curious german shepherd puppy from destroying something.

I'll make a typical schedule of my daily life out for you:

weekdays
7am-8am (getting ready for work): Dogs play in fenced in yard
8am-5pm (at work): Dogs in kennel
5pm-7pm (making/eating dinner/play with dogs outside): Dogs in kennel/yard (There is a dog door between them)
7pm-11pm (relaxing): Dogs in house
11pm-7am (sleeping): Dogs in kennel

weekends:
8am-11am: Dogs in crates to build up work drive for training
11am-3pm: Outdoor S&R and protection training
3pm-6pm: Kennel
6pm-11pm: Inside
11pm-8am: Kennel

My original comment was merely to make the point that just because my dogs are in the kennel doesn't mean that I am not at home, when in fact, there are times I AM home that they are in the kennel. Satisfied?

Learning dog training from Cesar Milan is like learning cooking from Iron Chef. Though at least he doesn't use food to bribe dogs into behaving like most "trainers".

I was about to post about how I like your dogs and how nice they look, but then I read this post. That's not how you're supposed to treat your dogs. Dogs need to be out running free and getting lots of exercise. Being locked up in a cage for 20 hours a day is not good for any dog; regardless of how much you exercise them in the 4 hours that they aren't locked up. How would you feel if we locked you in a cage and only paid attention to you for 4 hours a day?

If you don't have time to spend more than 4 hours a day with your dogs, then you don't have time to have dogs. I absolutely hate people who think that dogs are content to be locked up for the majority of their lives. I can tell just by watching your camera that those dogs just sit there all day looking forward to the extremely small amount of time that they get to spend with their owner. How sad; the dogs look so nice.

Abusing my dogs give me great pleasure. Stay tuned for tonight when I make them fight each other.

LOL. Cesar Milan is no Iron Chef of the dog world. Letting one of his dogs to be attacked/bitten so he could dominant the offending dog makes him a moron.

And nothing wrong with using food to bribe a dog for training. It's the first step in training while transitioning away from treats as you complete it. It may take longer to train but just as effective.

I mostly agree. I was just pointing out that what you see on TV is entertainment. Using food alone doesn't get you much beyond basic obedience, however, and it is just as easy to start off with the "choker" style collar than transition to it at some point. It depends on the dog though I guess. Both of our dogs are more toy-oriented than food-oriented, so we use the choker/prong for corrections, and the toy for reward.

You're totally right. I should have just left them at the shelter to be euthanized rather than giving them a loving home, food, and training.

WTF you training house dogs as protection dogs?!?

Because a house doesn't need protected?

God forbid I train a german shepherd to work for the purpose they have been bred for their entire existence. Or maybe it's just a fun way to spend some time bonding with my dogs.

In reality, I don't think you have a clue what protection training really is, so why don't you go and educate yourself on shutzhund, search & rescue, and protection training
