So right now i booted off the original hard drive which is now setup as the slave.

I installed the HD from my other computer as the master drive, but when i try to boot off the drive it just keeps restarting. The hard drive that i installed has stuff on it and windows XP operating system. I'm a little confused why i cant boot of it since it works fine in my other computer.

Basically what i want to have happen is to boot off the second hard drive, with XP, and transfer all the files from my Windows ME hard drive, and format it.

Please help, i thought it would be a simple addition, but as usual it never is.

Thanks AT, your the best.

**the drive isnt showing up on my computer either**

I would guess that the problem is that the WinXP installation has hardware drivers that were installed to support your other computer that are incompatible with the computer that you moved the drive into. You might be able to boot of the new hard drive in safe mode, remove the drivers and then restart and let winxp reinstall whatever drivers are appropriate. Or you could do a clean install of win xp on the new hard drive and then copy the desired files off the old drive.

Well, you would have been better off deleting the OS off the one hard drive, make it slave, put new one was master, install fresh OS to new hard drive, copy contents over, format old drive

I remember reading if people tried to do what you are doing and had Win95 on the HD, the could fry their newer xp capable bios

I'm a lil confused which is master which is slave (currently) and what OS's are on each one and what drive you want in what computer as master or slave?

I'm confused a bit, but it looks like the hard drive has XP on it. If so, XP reboots during bootup because you don't have the required device drivers for your newer computer's disk controllers, or your newer computer uses a different HAL compared to your older computer.

ok,

My slave is windows ME, which i am booting off of right now.

My master is the Windows XP, which isnt being recognized in ME and restarts during startup

Should i switch them, make the ME master and the XP slave. Then what? I thought the XP would boot fine, thats why i made it the master.

Depending on the differences in your mobo you cannot move HDDs like that. You can try to repair the XP version with the install disk. When the install asks if you want to do fresh install or repair, make sure you do the repair. Otherwise it will install over your existing XP.

You can move HDDs except for in two instances:

1. The hard disk drivers you have installed in XP aren't compatible with the new MB, in which case you'll get reboots or stop 7Bs when booting. There's an easy fix for this.
2. The HALs are different. Nothing you can do here.

You prolly can't. Win XP is likely formated in NTFS and ME is Fat32. Me can't read NTFS (or whatever its called)

Here's an article on Anadtrech how to switch mobo's w/o reinstalling XP LINK. Also do a search here, this is acommon topic. I don't do XP, but those who do have offered solutions for this. Ex. IIRC, deleting all device drivers b4 moving XP to the new mobo and then XP find the new devices and install the correct drivers etc.

I always just reformat/reinstall.

Once you get XP running on the new mobo then you can transfer the data off the ME install.

This has been discussed countless times in the forums - the easiest way is to boot up with the old computer/motherboard, switch the IDE controller to Standard PCI IDE, and then immediately shut down and put the drive in the new computer/motherboard, and then boot up.
