adding users?

hey everyone,

this might be a newbie-ish question... but at my girlfriends' place... she has a 4 port router for the dsl, but there are 5 computers in the household...

i just found out that all they do have whoever wanna use the net plug into the hub, which is ok most of the time, but when everyone wanna go online.. someone is budged out...

so im thinking there must be a way to get all the users connected... can i add a hub in some daisylink way to expand it to an 8 user system or would her only solution (seemingly less coss effective) to ditch the 4 port router and up to an 8??

looking for the cheapest, most cost effective solution... what do you guys think?

Daisey chaining hubs/switches should be fine for now.

Mmmhmm. Like n0c said. You didn't give a brand, but most support 254 concurrent users. The manual should tell you (like there's a switch for a hub, or you need to crossover....). fwiw.

cool to know that the daisychain idea is feasible... i asked her what model she has..and u know girls... "huh?"

ill find out tomorrow and see if i can fgure things out... im guessing that one of the downlink ports would connect to the upstream port on the next hub?

hey everyone again,

okay okay, i got some more details...

it turns out they got a linksys nh105 hub (and not a router)... so im thinking cheapest solution is to get another similar hub and use a cross-over cable to connect the downlink of the 1st hub into the uplink of the 2nd hub?

or would a regular cable be what i need?

secondly... i would guess the better solution would be to suggest a router to them for security purposes and all that good stuff? and then daisy the hub to the router w/ a crossover??

Router. Besides security and not having to daisychain and have another hub laying around, you get switching.
