Given that you have a router, you really don't want a 2nd one. It would be better to have a wireless access point (WAP) instead of a wireless router.

With a WAP, you'll connect it to your current router, and there won't be too much else to do (except fiddle around with security settings).

If you want to use two routers, you'll need to disable dhcp on one of them. In general, just kill the router features so it acts like a switch.

AP is surely the way to go, but can be done with 2 routers. Assign the WAN ip to the wireless on the same subnet as the wired one. U an still run dhcp off of both, just set up a different subnet for the wireless one. U may want to assign the wireless one a static IP and bind it by MAC to the wired one if your router supports it. Obviously, you will plug a LAN port to WAN port (wired - wireless)

I too am needing help adding a wireless router
to an existing wired network.
Linksys BEFSR41 - 4 port Cable+DSL router
Linksys WRT54G - 4 port Wireless Cable+DSL router
I currently have both routers running DHCP
wired routers uplink port connected to the wireless routers
internet port. The only way I found to get internet access to
both routers was to create a second subnet on the wireless router.
Is this the best and only way to do it?

thx for any comments

Do you really need both to be running dhcp? Usually, you can just disable router features and use the 2nd router as a switch.

can i have dhcp on the wired router. and assign the wireless a static ip on same subnet

ex: WireR(dchp on addy .2 to .7) wan gateway(.1)--> 2 lan PCs (.2,.3) and WirelessR(.4)--> wan pc(.5)

I want to keep the printserver and share resources on same network.

How would i disable router functions for the WL R?

I did switch to all wireless but did not like the network performance

In my case the wired network works more efficiently then the wireless?

Dozz & Oslama.

Under such circumstance it is m much better to draw a simple sketch of your foreseeable Network.

Upload it to your personal web space and put a link in your post.

Without a pic. it sounds like you trying to make use of old Routers that you got stuck with. Doing so is not necessarily a building blocks to a sound network. Could be that the Trade forum is a better way to deal with the issue.

A good pic, will clarify what actually you would like to do.

Right you would make things a easier to understand with a quick drawing. I never heard of a WAP enabled router being able to act as a bridge or a repeater. I believe the solution you are looking for requires a Access Point. Are you trying to connect two physically wired networks with a wireless connection. If that is what your are trying to do I am almost certain a WAP enable router will not work.

I hope this helps

I want to add a wireless router to a wired network. how would i connect it to my existing network.

I have dhcp enabled on the wired router(4port) and connected to 3 pcs.

I want the wireless router to act as brigdge for the its wireless client. the wireless client only has to have internet access. and not necessarily connect to the internal network.

First connect your Wireless Router to a computer, and make sure that the IP number of the Wireless Router is of the same subnet as the main Router, while you are at disable DHCP and or any other filters or special setting on the Wireless. Connect a regular port on the Wireless Router (leave the WAN port open) to a regular port on your main Router. At this point if done correctly the Wireless Router is a Switch (you can use the regular ports) with a Gateway Access Point.

You could buy two wireless nics and put one in your computer and the other one in another computer. Then bridge the wireless nic with the wired nic.

i disabled dhcp on the wireless router, assigned it a static ip of the wired (DHCP) subnet and gateway ip points to the wired
router. Now, I can connect to the internet and the intranet.

This seems to work. or do i need to do anything else.
