Additional Memory

I just purchased a new Dell Dimesion 9100, equiped with a dual core 830 cpu, and 2- 512mb of memory. Wanted to get 2 gigs but Dell's price for the other gig, was a gig.

I have 4 slots for memory, 2 which will be used. The memory is 240 pin, DDR2. Must this memory be installed in pairs? If I install a 1 gig memory stick will the computer recognize it as 2 gigs. If I only install the 1 gig stick will it operate in dual channels or only single channel? Does that really make a difference in performance?

Yes, you need matching pairs to keep dual channel, and you definitely want to keep it with that cpu. It makes a big difference. I recommend Samsung, Infineon, or Nanya brand. Unless you want to ditch the ram you have now, then I'd go with 2GB of Cosair Value Select.

I have four 512MB modules of Corsair VS in my 9100, runs great. But I have seen some problems mixing the Corsair with the brands Dell uses. I've worked with a lot of 9100's.

How does one make sure that the new modules will be compatabile with the Dell modules? Is there a way to tell who manufactured the chips for Dell? Would it be better to buy from a company that uses the same chip on the memory that Dell uses or do you just take a chance?

Yes, it is recommended to buy in pairs but you do not have to if you don't want to. Dual Channel is alright but it's not required to make the system run decently. Anyways, when you go to memory dealers, they do have compatibility chart which will show you which one is compatible with your system.

for anyone who has the 9100 with two 512mb of memory (ddr2-533), pc4200, 1.8V (which were installed by dell), what specific brands of RAM have you successfully used in conjunction with dell's pre-installed ram? I've got a similar rig as busterbrown885 and I'm itching to upgrade to 2 gigs. I have choices but wanted to see what any of you have successfully used.
