Add'l RAM for NEC Printer - Good Deal at $50???

Hey, I found a 16 MB SIMM at crucial.com for $50.67 shipped (2 day fed ex) for my NEC Superscript 870 (remeber the buy.com DOD this fall for $130???)

Don't know if this is a good price or not with all the price drops on memory lately.....

correct me if im wrong, but simms are 72 pin old crap... which should be $5 anywhere else..

DIMMS are what cost money these days..

I have a bag of 4 and 8 meg simms up in my attic somewhere.

It's funny I have the superscript 1260, takes a regular 72pin 60ns 16mb ram. No special needed!

dudleydocker - Just go to your friendly neighborhood computer shop and ask for a 4mb 72 pin SIMM. That is all you will need. Unless, of course, you have developed a habit of printing entire books.

I have the HP 1100AXI (Which has the same specs as the SuperScript 870) and I bumped the ram from 2 to 18 megs. In terms of printing you will see almost no difference in speed unless you print more than 40 or 50 pages at a time. The only place it really does make a difference is with the feed scanner on the front of my printer (Which I know the NEC doesn't have), that works much better, but really I wouldn't bother if all I was doing was printing.

I too have the Superscript 1260 and just popped in a regular 16MB SIMM. No prob whatsoever, although it doesn't print any faster. It's just cool to say that my printer has 16MB of additional RAM.

Now if NEC only made Windows 2000 drivers for the 1260. Using the generic drivers doesn't give me full support. :|

I have about 140 sticks of 4 meg simms at work that I can't find a home for. Works great in stuff like this.


Extra memory is nice if you want to print and turn off your computer, otherwise ur computer sits there and spools the job to the printer until its complete because the buffer can't hold the entire print job.... now if u only print text... 2 megs is probably fine. I'm sure glad the 4050 at work had 64 megs of ram when I threw it a 1840 page print job tho....

I have the 870 as well and it should take a max of 16MB FastPage memory (single SIMM). Since this stuff probably isn't made anymore, I haven't been able to find a *16MB SIMM* for under $20 ... and that's on PriceWatch **before** shipping. This stuff ain't cheap to say the least.

BTW, I priced 128MB EDO **DIMM** at $300+ a week or two ago. Yes, SDRAM is cheap, but the old stuuf may not be.

dudley, which NEC printer do you have? I bought an 870 and then a pair of 8mb simms. Used one to upgrade and have the second sitting here on the desk. I need to pick up a 4mb for an 860.
