When everyone was kicked out of the house I drove 3 blocks to the beach to sleep it off. I would never have been drunk if I had known I was not going to be able to stay. Otherwise no.

Yea, many times auctually, i can mantain great on the road. Ive been out when i shoulnt have though before....... SOOOOOO i bring you these statistics

Here?s some more food for thought. I did a little research on nationwide car crashes and this is what I came up with. In 2000 there were 6,393,409 crashes. Out of that only 16,653 were alcohol related. That?s a whopping .2%. Now before all you drunk drivers get a big smirk on your face, there?s more. This was the good news.

Out of the 6 million crashes only 37,409 resulted in fatalities, .5%. Not too shabby. Now for the bad news, 508,000 crashes had alcohol as a factor 7%. Still not to shabby, but now for the bad news. Out of the 37,409 fatalities there was 14,264 fatalities where alcohol as a factor, that?s a BIG 38%.

More food for thought, out of all those fatalities 56% didn?t have their seat belt on. All information was obtained from the National Center for Statistics & Analysis and NHSTA.

If I'm driving I will have 2 beers in 2 hours, tops + at least 1 hour after the last one. I never, ever break that rule, heck, if I'm driving, I usually refrain from drinking at all.

So the answer is nope... I have friends who have tho.... I let them know I thought they were dumbasses for doing it.

Drinking and driving is just stupid if you ask me. I'm dissapointed so many AT'ers have driven drunk...

I've only done it twice.

First time I did it was on my 21st birthday (not a big deal, since the legal age in Alberta is 18!), had waay too much to drink and drove with a friend to a different bar. Did just fine on the freeway.

Second time I did it was a year later, again, not a big deal, but I nearly passed out on the way home.

Important note: I'm of Asian descent, and I'm one of the unlucky 50% who seem to lack the enzyme to digest alcohol (alcohol dehydrogenase), which means I'm a pretty friggin easy drunk.

Yes...probably around 6-12 times. It's very strange how it happens, though. You are taught so many times not to drink while intoxicated, but that just gets thrown to the wind when you actually go out "in the field". I don't think I ever drove drunk while in college, but I have after those Friday happy hours after work. All your co-workers go home sloshed...they all drive home, you drive home, everybody shows up on Monday. Nobody calls a cab, nobody talks about whether you are OK to drive. It just seems normal...as if it's really OK. Frickin' weird since everyone knows that drunken driving is a no-no.

Interestingly enough, my worst episode was after an corporate holiday party. They had an open bar for hours and everybody drank like nuts. When it came time to go home, people got (rolled) into their cars and drove off. I drove 10 miles to get home and did not remember a minute of the commute when I arrived back at my house. On hindsight, that was scary as hell. I don't understand it: A large group of well-educated, employed adults - of all ages - acting in an illegal and objectionable manner...but because nobody questions it, it happens.

To some of you younger people, I can understand your "shock". It DOES seem shocking if you look at it from fifty feet away. But when you get out of college and enter the corporate world, you may be shocked to find how common drunken driving is. Not to say it is acceptable. No...but it's similar to finding out how many kids smoke pot in college. It's like "WOW!"

I really don't know what else to say. Now that I have overcome my alcoholism, I have not been legally drunk for over a year. I don't want to go back to those times for a plethora of reasons. But be aware that it's something that can affect everybody, even the best-educated and well-heeled.

ONCE. It was the dumbest thing I ever did. I've never done it since (even walked home a few times a LONG way in the FREEZING COLD rather than drive).

My drinking often happens when I'm out with a friend. Beyond a little buzz, we let the most sober one drive. We usually wait around if we're both drunk. It sucks. I have to be liberal on this and wish that breathalizers were mandatory on cars.

right now, i'm driving down the highway at 80 MPH, typing on my laptop with cell modem, steering with my knee, looking in the back seat for the beer I dropped.

<< how are you supposed to know if you are over the legal limit? >>

I have a consumer breathalyzer that actually fairly accurate. Goes up to .20. In college I used to bring it out at our parties so we could see who was the drunkest. Now I keep it in my car.

I've driven drunk once. I regret it.

<< I make sure to cut off drinking at least 2 hours before I'm supposed to drive and I've *never* broken that >>

You do realize that the body only metabolizes alcohol at the rate of .0015 per hour? So, let's say the legal limit is .01, and you're an average sized male. Six to eight drinks (depending on the time span the consumption occured) would put you at about .014, which means that even after two hours, you're still legally drunk.

Good point, but to make it accurate you've got your numbers mixed up. You're off by a decimal. Most limits are .10, not .01. It clear what you meant, but it might confuse some folks.
