only when it's true, but what you are saying is non-sensical and ill-thought out, not to mention shallow!

please do not post in this thread anymore. you really didn't need to crap it up.
this thread is about doing something nice to show our appreciation to soldiers standing up for us.
let's leave it at that.

I've wondered why we don't have a national "Adopt an Iraqi" program personally. Let's be honest here, our troops are pretty well taken care of at the moment, however, there are likely thousands of Iraqi families and civilians who could use a "pick-me-up" from some Americans back here. Many of them probably feel as though the only American who wants to be kind to them wears a uniform. I know that language and translation of it could be a problem, but why haven't we done more for the Iraqi people in this whole thing?

They're already getting a pick-me-up. Sorry, but I'm going to support our troops until they come home. When they're home, THEN I'll consider adopting an iraqi kid if some company offers it like they do African children.

As a soldier myself, I respectfully disagree. A common concern I hear from soldiers returning from over there is how poorly the Iraqi people are doing. Yes, they've been ripped out from under a vile dictator, however, their lives have been turned upside down. I hear troops all the time talk about "that poor kid" or "their house was destroyed" and things like that all the time. Our troops are living in luxury by comparison to a lot of Iraqis over there, that's a fact.

Rogue has a great point. In fact, anything I receive in care packages that can be of use, or may be wanted, by the Iraqi kids I immediately send to some of my buddies in up in Iraq for distribution. When I tell the folks back home that parts/all of their care packages are hitting here in Kuwait then going north, they are always very happy that their gifts are actually getting to folks who can use them. Granted, the troops around here will skim out some things they may want/need first, but we are pretty well taken care of both here and, to a lesser extent, up in Iraq and over in Afghanistan.

Thanks for backing me up on my belief.

correct me if i'm wrong, but i do believe the soldiers in this "adopt a soldier" program sign up on their own. therefore they'd appreciate correspondence/packages from back home.

while i appreciate the soldiers in this thread who responded with selflessness, i also think it's not a bad thing to let those soldiers who want to be in this program know that we care about them too.

and fyi, i also donate to missions through my church that benefit children in need around the world.

moshquerade...you are right. we were asked by the support battalion here if we wanted to sign up. if we expressed interest in receiving care packages, they put our names/ranks/addresses down. we weren't pressured, but given the opportunity. some took the offer, some didn't, but they all appreciated it and the willingness of folks back in the States to send stuff our way.

rogue...gotta give credit where credit is due.

there should be both, adopt a soldier, and adopt an iraqi.

i want to support organizations in africa, but i don't want to do it via religious organizations, just like i want to support people in iraq but don't want to do it through religious organizations
