I think I've heard other football players say similar things in the past.

I wish I could find the quote from the other guy who said it because he made a much more compelling case for drawing the parallel.

Compelling? You mean he actually managed to somehow draw a credible parallel between athletes drawing a minimum of $285,000.00 per year and a slave? Whose only travel restrictions are to be on hand for practices and games? Whose only employment restrictions involve which NFL team they will play for any given year? Who when they do change teams can bring along their spouse and children? Who are not restricted by law from becoming literate? Who if they do leave their team at worst can be compelled to appear in a court of law to deal with contractual issues?

If someone actually managed to make a compelling case that in any way answers even those minimal questions I posed above I would like to see it otherwise I have to think that the person that made the compelling statement knows jack shit about slavery and what it really means and entails.

I also don't think there were millions of people waiting in line to become slaves, nor could slaves simply quit and walk away. Other than that, I think NFL players are bought at auction...

Also, anyone who has ever worked in fast food or retail can attest to that too, re: "...but there are people working at regular jobs who get treated the same way, too.”

Sorry I don't buy the premise of that book anymore than I buy the perverted idea that blacks can't be racist because they supposedly "lack power". The undeniable fact is that a slave is property, owned by another human being. This is not a contract that can be bought and sold like an NFL contract, the actual human being is owned by the master and lives a life defined entirely by his owner, can be bought and sold by the owner. It is sad that I seemingly learned more about the ugly realities of slavery in a public school in the south in a state that was so determined to prevent integration that they closed the public schools for a year than they seemingly teach in public schools today.

i'm sorry, did someone force adrian peterson to become a football player instead of getting an education and finding a job where he didn't feel like a slave?

i certainly missed THAT story. i really hope the owners fleece these entitled little brats for every penny they can.

Am I hoping too much?

what a dumbass. i foresee an apology from him in the near future.

I doubt it.

Some of these assholes get wet with excitement when they get a chance to complain about their lives.

They are just shit heads with money and fame.

Frankly, I consider some of them to be no different than Paris Hilton; they both have some sort of entertainment value and they choose to entertain the way they do.

I'm with rudeguy. Country is in a recession and the NFL is going to strike because they don't think they're making enough millions of dollars. Ridiculous.

All he had to do was say the owners were greedy assholes who want a disproportionate amount of revenue. Instead, he now looks like a tard by pulling the race card. Grats.

LOL, the recession BS? Seriously? Regardless of the country's economic standpoint, the NFL continue to get make more each season. Yet, for some reason, the players should be content and let the owners take more of the money. Sorry, I don't buy it. People go to watch football players play, nothing else. In a sport that makes billions, I don't see it out of line that 53 players should get 50+% of the revenue. They are the ones that make it a billion dollar industry, they're the ones with the talent to be there.

Race card? You do realize white people are players in the NFL also... right? He said slavery. Meaning, the players are property of the owner. They're commodities, possessions to be bartered with, etc. Very few players in the NFL have the right to dictate where they go if the team no longer needs/wants them, and the ones that do don't actually have the right, they simply have a front office that would like to play ball in a fitting way for the player. Further, many players enter the NFL in a 4 year contract for league minimum (or fairly close to it), and when that contract is up, the team has the right to offer a tender to the player to keep them around for another year at a fairly modest salary in most cases. This type of thing happened to Vincent Jackson of the Chargers.

I totally agree with you. These idiots on this forum can't (or won't) see the tragedy that is the enslavement of these young men. I recommend that everyone watch the NFL Network, which provides extra coverage of games/practices that you don't see on the major broadcast channels. Half the teams in the league have added cotton picking drills to their practice routines, requiring players to sprint 40 yards, pick a barrel of cotton, and run it to the mast'r home in time for supper. Worse yet is that, after a fumble (what you all see as a commercial break), the offending player is tied up and given 20 lashes for his error. Finally, when the game is done, players are sent back to their quarters (you know, the $5 million mansion), where they are forced to breed with swimsuit models and groupies.

How dare the rest of you fucktards question this!!

they are on strike because the 'pro player safety' NFL wants them to play MORE, pay them LESS, and wont open their books to their employees

the 18 game seasons is bullshit and should never happen, and of course makes Goodell look like a fool as he has tried to 'champion' player safety all year and is now asking them to play even more

slavery was a poor choice of wording due the connotations it still has in this society, and beacuse 90% of people(including most of this board) think all NFL players make 10+ mil a year and have huge houses all over and drive tons of ferraris

there is 1 reason that the NFL is not even REMOTELY close to slavery in any sense at all ... not even close.

THEY FUCKING CHOSE TO PLAY IN THE NFL, THEY WERE NOT FORCED AND AGREED TO THE TERMS OF THE NFL BEFORE THEY CHOSE TO PLAY IN IT!
