God, he's sure making it hard for me to sympathize with the players.

I wish the media would give more attention to the guys playing their hearts out for the league minimum, but it's always the multi-millionaire superstars that they focus on.

Which is why AP is a dildo and hopefully the rest of the players remind him to kindly stfu.

Yep - the players/union are really using up their public perception brownie points quickly. Its almost like they got big headed by their overwhelming support by the fans/media...and now they're just going overboard. The tide is going to turn on them, quickly.

Is playing the NFL supposed to be your automatic ticket to wealth and riches?

I didnt say that. My comments on that are merely aimed at those that think that AP is representative of the NFL, when he is on THE TO earners. the NFL is like the rest of the county, 10% of the players have 90% of the wealth.

90% of the NFL players arent millionaires. That is all I am saying, nothing more, nothing less.

some of you need need to pull your 'knee jerking faux rage having heads' out of your asses. Its stupid to treat every NFL player like hes AP, and also stupid to denounce all of them as rich cry babies over his words.

I agree with alot of the NFLPA's issues with the owners, and think the NFL is actively trying to screw them all for their own gain. it has nothing to do with what the person this thread is about said

I refuse to play their game and take a side. Professional football is making all involved well off and I collectively refer to the players and owners as "those guys" and those guys are well on their way to killing a gold egg laying goose. I really am not even paying much attention to all this and won't unless the first weekend after Labor Day arrives with no football being played.

I hope they drag it out so there is more air time for other sports.

From the article

But even some NFL players criticized him, like Green Bay’s Ryan Grant, who tweeted:

“Their is unfortunately actually still slavery existing in our world.. Literal modern day slavery. That was a very misinformed statement.”

Sorry it bugged the hell out of me.

I think I've heard other football players say similar things in the past.

I wish I could find the quote from the other guy who said it because he made a much more compelling case for drawing the parallel.

Did Haynesworth say the same thing about a year ago (maybe less?) after getting his absolutely absurd contract?

Given the number of owners versus the number of players and the owner's IQs vs. the player's IQs was anyone in doubt who would win the battle of stupid comments?

Any minute amount of sympathy I had for the players just went out the window.

Do explain, sensei.

It's pretty much simply what I (and some others) have said earlier. The owners hold all the cards, and the players are commodities that they have little respect for. If they need to eek out a win, it may come at the expense of someone's dodgy knee that needs time to heal. Many owners could give two shits about the long-term health of their players. Hell, if your RB is carrying the ball 400 times a season, no biggy. Just cut him after he turns into a glass doll and sign some youngster to take over.

It simply amounts to the possession mentality. It may exist in some construction jobs and other labor intense jobs, but the stakes are much higher in the NFL world.

Was slavery a poor choice of words? Sure. But it meets the general point of the players being possessions who have little to no choice on what to do once their contracts are signed.

Ignore the money aspect, as that is clearly not what AP is referring to. Other than that, shouldn't be too hard of a concept for you to grasp.

Except the money aspect is the biggest aspect.

Yea - you're getting used and abused. That's football. That's the sports you agreed to play. But...you're getting paid potentially millions upon millions of dollars to do so. You aren't doing it because you have to.

Defend him all you want - he's wrong. He's very, very wrong. They agree to the hard work that comes with an NFL contract because they're getting paid large sums of money to do so. If you are of sane mind, you cannot just remove the money aspect from the equation, because its the most important aspect. Its what the owners and players are BOTH fighting for here.

SO will it be OK to just start calling AP Kootakintae from now on?

will that be considered...offensive?

Honestly, this should be his official nickname. No way would that be racist; just a perfect reminder of idiocy.

simply put--comparing the situation of an overpaid professional athlete with all the trappings of modern, comfort life at their disposal, not really working in the real sense, to a class of people whom, throughout history, were kidnapped, sold, forced into labor, tortured regularly, often forced into sex for pleasure, entertainment, breeding purposes...is fucking idiotic.

that's all there is to it. There is simply no reason that a rational human being would make such a connection. Far less reason for a human being to even defend that connection.

seriously, give up.

There are workers and laborers who have suffered far more in their disputes with management than any NFL "middleclass" athlete has ever suffered.
