So here's a question. Do any of you find the VW commercial showing the loser dad teaching his loser son how to throw worse than a girl? How would you feel if the punchline for that commercial would be dad's husband coming out and cheering the two on?

I would have had no problem with it. I see nothing wrong with a spouse cheering on their husband and son, regardless of gender or their thowing ability..lol. In these situations, the gay part only becomes the punchline because you are not used to seeing it. For someone who is gay, they might not necessarily see it as a punchline...they see it as *gasp* normal.

A wise man once said that "The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposing ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function.".


Simply because I wish that the proliferation of the human species didn't come at the cost of sacrificing the biodiversity of Earth's ecosystems (driving species to extinction, creating massive amount of pollution in third world countries, etc.), that does not mean that I want to kill billions of people. I simply wished that our overpopulation did not exist in the first place - we are such a robust species that we would still thrive at 1/10th of our size.

Again - tell us why you think it's a punchline. I have a feeling you would think this in any situation where someone markets a product using a SSM couple. As to whether I'm "pretending" to support equality, or wanting to "appear" progressive and supportive: the first time my partner and I saw that commercial together, my only response was to look at him and say "cute couple". It didn't make me want to go out and buy a Kindle, or start raving about how awesome Amazon was. It was just nice to see a regular portrayal of a SSM couple, that's it.

You played football, I guarantee you heard at least one person at some point in time make the snide comment that a player on the team "plays like a girl."

I'm positive at some point part of your motivation to become a better football player was so you don't appear to "play like a girl." It's a part of growing up in America.

Yes, now that we're older, we realize a lot more of the bullshit and pointlessness behind the pressure of sports growing up. But it doesn't change the fact that the VW commercial very much so is playing on that joke.

If they had the father teaching his son how to wear a dress and walk in high-heels with the punchline "pass down something he will be grateful for", this is the exact same joke.

People get upset over commercials featuring Gay themes because they are straight...but I am a straight woman and I am bothered by Herbal Essences commercials that feature women pleasuring themselves by washing their hair and moaning loudly.

And these aren't late night commercials....

They should really push those commercials to the max and have the woman say "oh yeah, put it in my ass" while washing her hair.

I am sure some gay rights activists will appreciate your support, but I have to inform you that gay rights are not about lifestyles. It is about discrimination on the basis of sex, of which discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation is an extension. You will often see the two go hand in hand and those are not accidents.
