I played football for quite a few years, offensive and defensive tackle. I had plenty of good days playing in my childhood, but I grew up to not be a total judgmental asshole (which, in your case, actually happened).
But then you understand the joke in the commercial. The judgment I'm placing is that you refuse to acknowledge the joke in the commercial.
You played football, I guarantee you heard at least one person at some point in time make the snide comment that a player on the team "plays like a girl."
I'm positive at some point part of your motivation to become a better football player was so you don't appear to "play like a girl."
It's a part of growing up in America.
Yes, now that we're older, we realize a lot more of the bullshit and pointlessness behind the pressure of sports growing up. But it doesn't change the fact that the VW commercial very much so is playing on that joke.
If they had the father teaching his son how to wear a dress and walk in high-heels with the punchline "pass down something he
will be grateful for", this is the exact same joke.
