ADSL Network

OK heres the situation, i have 1 computer in the office and 1 computer in my room, they are about 75 feet apart and between 4 walls. The comp in the office has a internet connection the one in my room doesnt, the one with the connection has an ADSL modem with an Ethernet cord plugged into it then inot the computer, and a DSL cord plugged into the modem going to the filter which is plugged into a phone jack. Now to get a connection in my room what do i have to buy, and do. Do i need a router or an Acces point to plug into my modem? I know i will need an Adapter for each of the computers, right?

You can go wired or wireless.
Wired, you need a network card in each computer, then connect them to a switch or router (if you dont have a router, I'd reccoment a router since it can protect your computer from internet attacks). You will have to run a network cable from each computer to your switch or router, usually you locate them next to your modem.

Wireless: Buy a wireless router and buy a wireless USB thingy (or a card if you wish) for the other computer and leave the 1st computer which is already wired, wired.

In either case the switch or router will need to be after the computers, but before the dsl modem.

Most routers have 4 ports in them already if you want to go for that. In either case you should be able to buy what you need for under $50 (I've seen switches and routers for $10 on sale if you can wait for decent sales).

thank you for your help devistater, how will the router have any acces to the internet if i dont connect it up to my modem some hw?so will i need to hook up my DSL modem to the router somehow?

oh and yes i want to go wireless since the rooms are quite far from each other

Wall > phone line >DSL filter > phone line > DSL Modem > Ethernet cord > Wireless Router > Ethernet Cord > Desktop PC

You're just adding that router an an extra ethernet cord into your existing set up that will have your first computer maintain it's current connection.

then you simply need to buy the appropriate wireless adapter (PCI card, USB adapter, PCMCIA Card) for the second computer, and it will connect off the signal broadcast from your shiny new router.

Dont forget that the DSL filter is only for the voice phones. It should NOT be on the DSL modem unless it has like 2 plugs on it one labeled voice and one labeled modem.

Yeah, that is impressive that your signal is strong enough to make it through the filter, means you have a good connection to the CO. But make sure you remove that filter, you should notice a good increase in speed when you do that.

and one more question, with wireless is the speed considerably slower or is it just the same?

As far as the internet is concerned it will be just about the same speed if not the same speed. For LAN based speed it will be significatly slower.

G isn't bad for almost everything. If you are doing multiple gig file copies every day, then go wired. You may want to get someone with a wirless router and card to test your setup, to make sure wireless will make it with a decent SNR to your room before you purchase the equipment.

The tests I've seen show that the 802.11g flavor of wireless can hit around 25-35mb under ideal conditions as compared to normal wired of 100mb. So as the other guy said, if you are transferring huge files constantly though the network, many gigabytes a day you need to find a way to go wired.
