Just got the word that we are closed tomorrow due to the impending ice age. No need to use vacation or sick time. No need for anyone to even work remotely.

Adult 'snow' days are so very awesome

Must be great. We don't get snow days here for work. Snow days here stop after high school. College and up, you're expected to get your ass in no matter how bad the weather is.

I remember during my college orientation I had asked if they have snow days like the schools and they basically laughed at me lol.

Virginny is doing much better with snow recently. The state and city governments have learned how keep roads clear and prevent outages.

It's an exceptional rarity here, which helps make this so good. The last one I remember was a long time ago and only because the roads were all shut down from the ice storm.

No mail delivery here tomorrow. Too cold.
Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.
So much for THAT.

I'm thinking I'll skip work tomorrow in solidarity with all my brothers up in the dangerous north.

Adult snow days suck when you need as many hours as you can get to survive. People work when sick for the same reason. Can't afford to miss a day.

You say that but something tells me they still do, albeit on rare occasion.

I think I had like two or three snow days during my college career. Far more bruised egos than days off, and deep bruises to my hips or some other body part to go along with that. Walking across an icy campus ought to be a gold medal sport.

But when the proverbial shit hit the fan, classes were canceled. I think I have actually heard of more such "snow days" after I graduated (8ish years ago) than I ever got to experience. After getting a taste in the earlier years I got back to hoping to get more like in early schools days but, alas, they never came the last two years.
Here in Ohio, winter weather is constantly an aberration - I've long said we experience all the seasons during winter, and then again throughout the rest of the year. But we went awhile without this kind of abnormal freeze, I never experienced this kind of cold during school - we just had snow/ice to deal with but thankfully normal winter temps for our region. We had mostly similar freakish cold temps a couple years back, and a lot of school days and local events got canceled because of it. Now that was a couple years after I graduated, in the midst of the "polar vortex" fearmongering (oh joy they brought it back... It's not the polar vortex, it's a *breakdown* in the polar vortex!!!)
This week? Shit, this is brutal, nobody needs to be walking to class across campus when windchill is going to be at the point where Fahrenheit and Celsius commingle on the scale (-40), and day high temps don't even reach into the positive scale in Fahrenheit. Now see, a word on that, we imperialist Americans don't even put a negative symbol in our temperature scale until the Celsius scale reaches about -18C. So, Canada... suck it!

and that's a thing we need to correct with different measures, and to certainly *not* encourage sick folk to work through it. That's a major economic drain on all of us!

Ideally any such "snow day" should be company PTO and not charged against any PTO/ETO balance. Don't punish the employees because nature decided to be a bitch! Alas, I don't write the rules.

Wait, you don't get paid for snow days? Since it's not your choice I would have figured it would still count as a normal day on the pay roll.

This is America! Where we try to find every possible way to screw the worker and maximize profit.

I get a "cold" day tomorrow. The university where I work closed for the day due to cold and extreme wind chills. Expecting 29 F below tonight with -50 to -55 windchills. High tomorrow in the mid teens below with 35 below wind chills. If we go to -30 F tonight it will tie the all time record low for this date.

We have 60 days to make up hours lost to inclement weather or we have to use PTO. That's not so bad when it's just a single day here or there. (Like this one was.) But multiple snow days get old *very* quickly.

we rarely get snows days at work. The last time was in December 2010. 3 days off due to massive snowfall. City was shutdown for 2 days including public transit. Cars were ordered off the roads on the 3rd day for snow removal.
