advice for helping scar heal

I had a plastic surgeon remove a mole from my forehead. I was told to put sunscreen if i go out and give it a 'massage' (not even sure how) a few times a day.

Somehow I think I should be doing more/using a cream or gel or vitamins or something. Anyone have any experience? I barely even spoke to the doctor (time is money I guess) just his assistant/nurse. tia..

That bites. The medical treatment isn't complete unless good aftercare advice is given. Time is money? I don't envy countries that don't have a free health service at the point of use.

Here in the UK we have a dressing type product (can't remember name) that's designed to help the healing of scars (and that means you'll have about 34 such products in the US, right? )

There's some stuff called Second Skin that you put on and it's supposed to make the skin heal in a normal skin pattern rather than a scar. I don't know if it works or not. Your doctor definitely should have given you more info for aftercare.

actually the scar is shaped in a Z almost.. i tell people zorro got to me , it's so it lines up with the wrinkles on my forehead when i raise my brows.. kinda thing..

based on what i have been told, with a fresh wound like that plop neosporin on it for the first week, like 5-6 times a day and keep it moist!

then soon after a layer of crud should just come off on its own.

massaging during healing promotes healing by flooding blood to the area. obviously you don't want to rip off your scab or stitches or whatever so be carefull the first week. once its just the pink discolored skin use vaseline again a few times/day for atleast another month and massage it in good with your finger tips for a few minutes a couple times/day.

that in theory should do more than just letting it be. also I believe certain topicals are myths as far as how vitamins can be absorbed through the skin.

trust me - no such thing as a scar reducing cream. just keep it clean and dry.
