Advice On A Motherboard?

Yeah, I'm building my computer, and I'd just like some advice..

I'll be using an AMD XP 1800, with DDR RAM. I'm thinking about either going with the KG7-RAID or the KR7a-RAID.

The KR7a seems a bit more expensive, are the benefits really worth it? Also, on their site, I see a KR7a-133-RAID, and a Kr7A-RAID, what's the difference?

Thanks.

Good choices. The K7Ra-133 has ata 133 support. I would go with whatever version your pocketbook can afford. Another good board is the Iwill xp333-r, which has ata 133 support, 6 channel sound, and raid, starting at about $115 on pricewatch.

Might also want to check out a SOYO Dragon Plus - about the same as a KR7A-RAID but cheaper (a little.. used to be a $20 difference) and it comes with good sound... newegg has em for $150 shipped.

The KR7A- raid is definately a good choice though, probably the best option right now for tweakers and overclockers.

Check out the latest Socket A motherboard roundup on anandtech.com - there is lots of good advice there. Basically, get a VIA chipset one (such as the KR7) over an AMD one (KG7) if you can afford it, as there is a slight performance increase. However, you'll be happy with most of the ones in the article - the standard is very high. The IWill board mentioned above is particularly worthy of interest.

Forget KR7A. There are boards that have better features in the same price range. If u don't want goodies like Sound and NIC, then go EPoX 8KHA+ which is cheaper. Nothing's wrong with KR7A, but regardless from what the roundup says, there is little to distinguish it from the rest of the board IMHO

I would wait personally... a whole batch of new boards on new chipsets are coming. Even if you don't want the new chipset it will push the current price down. If your in a hurry I would pick up a cheap ecs sis board to hold you over to better prices.

Thanks for the advice..

I'd rather not wait, I'm stuck on a 366mhz celeron with 64 megs of RAM right now. I wanna get off this as soon as possible.

The SOYO Dragon.. how many DDR slots does it have?

Also.. non one's answered this yet.. what's the difference between the KR7a-133-RAID and the KR7a-raid? They list both on its site.

Again, thanks.

I don't care what Tom's Hardware or Anandtech were smoking when they reveiwed the nForce chipset motherboards, but I would definitely recommend the MSI K7N420 Pro. I have had running constantly ever since I installed it, and the motherboard has yet to screw up. Not to mention it is just as fast, and in most cases faster, than any KT266A chipset board on the market.

Hope that helps.
