We're in the market for a lcd/dvd player for our car. Reviews on almost all of them are both good and bad. Sounds like the Durabrand (Walmart) ones are crap. The two least offensive ones so far seem to be the PVS2901 at Target for $200 (though can't find many reviews) and the Nortech dual system at Sams Club for $180. Both of these feature dual screens each with there own DVD player.
A dual system isn't a must, but is nice. The main complaint of the Nortech is that it doesn't have a battery for truly portable use, but I don't think that's really an issue for me (I'd use a laptop for flights). Really, I'm looking for any input I can get, so don't be shy...
