I only using it for some reports, disortation, documents.
I already have Lexmark Z52 to cover my color graphic needs.

Samsung ML4500? ~$199
Lexmark E312L? ~$299

Any other Laser printer that cost less than $300?

thanks.

TimeKeeper--Brother, NEC & Samsung all have lasers in this price range. The thing I would check out is how the toner/drum is replaced as this has a great impact on the cost of ownership. The HP/Canon system uses a combined toner/drum cartridge--cost more but the drum is replaced each time--50-80 to replace. The other systems use a separate toner replacement and a drum--usu the toner alone is in the 25 range--but the drum replacement is 130--these usu have fewer pages/toner and you end up replacing the drum 1-1 1/2 years. Some of these you refill the toner--it can get messy. Good luck, Paul

Picked up a Zerox P8 laser 600 DPI on the Auction boards (Ubid)for $49.00, very pleased with output, had it for one year now and it's working great, it was referb.
Might be an option for you

You might want to get a previous generation expensive laser, rather than a new cheap laser - quality will be heaps, heaps, HEAPS better

The NEC Superscript 870 is well less than $300. I have one and really like it.

I bought the Okipage 6w LED printer (really, it's the same as a laser) which was only $125US and toner is really cheap! Sure a new drum unit costs almost as much as a new printer, but by the time I wear out the drum (at over 8000-10000 sheets) I can afford something awesome!
This was a SUPER deal as far as I'm concerned. Memory is low so it's not for graphic arts, but I mainly bump out text or webpages - for that it's cheap and fast. I'm very happy.
4-6 pages per minute... Far better than the 2minutes per page of my old Canon 4300 inkjet!!

Here's my 2 cents:

Stay away from Samsung. HP is very good but is over-priced and toner replacement is expensive unless you go with re-manufactured toner, which cheap & everybody carrys it. Very good HP supports too. Some of the cheaper HP lasers are brain dead (no onboard memory & CPU), which I hate. NEC, I have hear some people love it very much but others hate it. NEC toners are $$$ & supports are c*rap. Brothers are good, great bangs for the money but images quailty & speeds are so-so. Lexmark's business laser sux, but I like their smaller personal laser printer like the E310.

I own a Lexmark Optra E+. Image quailty is average but hey it takes $5 to refill it. We have a similar one with 40,000+ page count at work. It out lasted our much more expensive Apple Laser Writer.

I would seriously consider the Brother HL-1240 (click this thread and read the review links I have posted).

It gives you the most quality bang for your buck with USB, Mac, Windows 9x/2000 support.

NEC 1400. Check CNET, it's down below $250. I have had an 870 for a couple of years now. Great printer. Someone mentioned their support. The board went on mine, called support, they gave me a RMA, shipped it to service center and it was back in 2 days, good as new.

It will do 12ppm at 1200 dpi. Most of the others mentioned are 300 or 600 @ 6-8 ppm.
