for first job, wouldnt really stress too much abt the salary, esp in the market. once you get in, get a couple years experience, you will have a MUCH better idea of your worth and you can either make a play for it at the current company, or jump to someone that will give you deserve. certain companies also just dont negotiate, try to do some research beforehand. there is no harm in asking for more, just dont put yourself in a position where they may want to look for cheaper options. entry level grads are a dime a dozen.

On the flip side, if you accept a lowball offer, it's going to come back to haunt you year after year. Both raises and bonuses are usually based off of a percentage of salary, which means that you'll likely continue to be receiving below average pay for many years to come.

New employers also ask how much you made at your previous job when applying for a new one, which means that you might get lower salary offers for future jobs as well. Just food for thought.

How much are they actually offering for this job? Your pay will have little to do with the national average and more to do with how much people earn in your area.

Nonsense. Employers will still pay a premium for a premium candidate. I'd shoot for 55K plus relocation. Check with salary.com first to make sure you're not too low.

Most financial places aren't hiring at all right now, and if they are it's to save money. Don't expect to get much in that field right now.

u make them give you a range first. if you must provide a figure first, you give them the high end of what you want.

Guys, i had my 2nd phone interview yesterday and f'd up. They asked me an appropriate range and i told them 40-42, but i'd prefer the avg of 45. I asked them more about it, and they said im on the avg to high avg range. Dammit i should've read this thread sooner. I guess i kinda got intimidated in the interview and didnt think it through entirely. Surely it aint too late at all. I think there is 1 or maybe 2 more interviews and thats when i'll just mention i re-analyzed my situation. There was some great advice in here, i appreciate it atot. I believe im a premium candidate, our bus. college is top 10 amongst publics, and if i dont find a more than decent salary in the begining its gonna be harder to achieve that higher salary later.

I also got offered a somewhat low (IMO) salary, and NO sign on bonus, which was something that two of my friends received when hired last year from the same employer. But considering the current economy, my average GPA (low 3 point something), and only one internship under my belt, I accepted.

I'd shoot for something a few grand above average for getting out of school. Right now if you have no experience you're a commodity. There's 10 more new grads lined up to take your place. A single guy can live off 45k pretty easily. You won't be eating fillet mignon every night but you sure won't be living off of ramen.

Exactly...chances are that they will not see a a financial return on new grads until a year after they start.
