Upgrade, but pretty much a new computer:

DFI "LANPARTY UT nF3 250Gb"
Apollo nVIDIA GeForce 6600GT Video Card, 128MB GDDR3, 128-Bit, DVI/TV-Out, AGP 8X
AMD Athlon 64 3000+, 1MB L2 Cache, 64-bit Processor for DTR Notebooks
PDP SYSTEMS Memory 184-Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200
Logitech Blue Performance Optical Mouse PS2/ USB, Model "MX510"
Lite-On Black 52X32X52X16 Combo Drive
ZALMAN CNPS7000A-AlCu Aluminum + Copper CPU Cooler
Logitech Z-3 Speakers w/ Subwoofer

Total: 745.

Any advice on this rig?

So, I see you will overclocking since you picked a Mobile AMD Athlon 64 3000+. It should work. I know that the 6600 is 128/256-Bit so you might want to look in to finding yourself a GeForce 6600GT 256-Bit on AGP 8x instead of 128-Bit. If you are going to be overclocking, I would recommend some better RAM. Kingston HyperX or Corsair XMS is what I would recommend. Do you need the speakers. If you can sacrifice the speakers, then you can get better gpu and ram.

Would the Corsair XMS Extreme Memory Speed Series be any good for overclocking?

(edit) It's only 7 dollars more...

Or the PATRIOT Extreme Performance RAM... it's 108 and has 2-2-2-5 timings

i think the 6600's are all 128bit... 6800 is where you get up to 256bit

not sure how much youre paying for your apollo,
but www.zipzoomfly.com has an Xfx 6600gt AGP for $229, free 2-day shipping... maybe that can shave off some extra bucks

The OCZ El Platinum Revision 2 is supposedely some of (if not the) best overclocking RAM you can get. Everything else looks good.

Okay, I've decided to drop the speakers and get a better video card, the 6800LE or 6800 and get better memory, but I'm not sure on the memory and the video card. Any help?

Nothing against you but i see so many people getting cdrw/dvd combo drives.

Why not get a good DVD burner? It can burn CD-R/RW's, watch DVD's and Burn DVD+/-R(W). Now adays it isn't even considered expensive. It can do anything that combo drive can do

You chose a Lite-on combo drive. Here is a Lite-ON 16X DVD burner for $64 (Black)
http://www.newegg.com/app/View...=27-106-962&depa=0

Maybe I'm just crazy.

you should tone down that motherboard and you would be able to afford a gig of RAM.

I just need a CD burner and a DVD drive... I don't really have a need for a DVD burner.

Saving 30 dollars on the motherboard wouldn't allow me to spend another 100+ dollars on memory.

for video card id go with regular 6800 over LE version

http://shop4.outpost.com/produ...sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

$249 + lifetime warranty, pretty hard to beat that... unless you got the bestbuy deal a while back

My system build which is somewhat similar:
Athlon 64 2800+ ($127)
Chaintech VNF3-250 ($73)
1 GB of corsair value select ($74 x 2)
BFG 6800 OC (best buy deal) ($229 + free HL2 + free Farycry)

Im not an overclocker, so i didnt need the fancy ram... and the Chaintech got ANANDS silvermedal award for socket 754

you should get a gig of regular pc-3200. i suggest the corsiar basis for $66 @ newegg. a gig of basic RAM will perform way better than a system with 512 "fast" ram. by lowering your motherboard to a $60 or $70 mobo, and getting rid of that 512 RAM you have now, you could easily afford a gig of RAM.

6800LE or non-ultra or whatever is not really worth the upgrade over a 6600GT im told. Save up for a 6800GT - it will be worth it in the long run.
If you want decent LL ram then try the Corsair XL, OCZ PC3200 Rev. 2 or Mushkin PC3200 Lvl II RAM using Samsung TCCD chips. It is by far the best RAM for A64s on the market. It will do DDR400 @ 2,2,2,5 (but 2,2,2,11 seems to be faster) which is nice - but it will clock to over DDR500. Avoid Kingston and definatly stay FAR away from Crucial/Micron.

Crucial ram can basiclly be sumed up as 'cheap, unstable, unreliable, high latency, bad overclocking rubbish'
Just avoid.

Guys, I've used ValueRAM and performance ram. All I can say is that performance ram is a marketing thing. They are both the exact same chip except valueram is fully optimized by the mfr. where as performance ram is. What is the point of overclocking and not tweaking the ram by yourself. Take me, I checked DDR2 HyperX timings and stuff. My DDR2 timing are right now doiwn to 3-2-3-8 (not right order) and those are the best times Better than HyperX DDR2. I wouldn't get any performance ram if I were you. The bst ram you can get is the cheapest stuff you can get.

I don't know about the Lite-on. I've got a Lite-on 52X burner, and while it does perform well, the thing sounds like a jet taking off. Maybe their DVD burners are quieter.

I think this is what I have decided on:

DFI LANPARTY UT --- $105
Jaton nVIDIA Geforce 6800 --- $267
AMD Athlon 64 300+ DTR --- $155
Corsair XMS 512MB DDR-3200 (2-3-3-6 1T) --- $99
Sony 52x32x52x16 Combo Drive --- $39.99
ZALMAN CNPS7000A-AlCu --- $34.99
Logitech Blue MX510 --- $35.50

Total: $736.48

Then my next upgrade would be another stick of the Corsair memory to get a total of 1GIG.
