I am desktopless

I sold my Core i7 3770k to a friend and now I waiting or trying to fight the urge to get a X79 MB and a Core i7 3930k or 3820...

I game, code, among other things with my rig. So as of now what I see in the benchmarks the i7 3930k really isn't much faster than the i7 3770k I had.

But I would like to get more cores for compiling....

Problem is Haswell is supposed to be a multithreaded monster IIRC, and I also hear IB-E is coming to X79 also? What about the X89 chipset? I really don't like how X79 got neutered as far as SATA 3 ports went, I want more than 2 Intel ports.

So any ideas? Should I wait until June? or just build a X79 now and hope IB-E is something great, by that I mean it will either beat Haswell or tie it at least?

Thanks!

If it were me I'd wait for Haswell!

But X79 is hella fast, 6 cores etc.

You won't be disappointed either way.

I'd wait for Haswell. My i7 920 lasted this long, it'll soldier on for another couple of months.

Normally I'm not a fan of waiting, but Haswell is so darn close. Plus, it's not like the 3930k is going away anytime soon. If you really need 6 cores, x79 will still be there.

I will wait for Haswell, and see how it performs, if not to hot IB-E is out around then also correct? Maybe X89 will be out then also?

Thanks!

The problem sounds like you wanted a better chipset. IIRC the mainstream chipset (Z77) has less features than it's High end counter-part (X79) but I think the main differences are PCIe lanes. Leaving the Z87 to possibly be the equivalent of the X79.

PCIe lanes for graphics is handled by the CPU. No chipset can fix that.

LGA2011 got 40 lanes, LGA1155 got 16 lanes.

Who told you that? Haswell will still be 4 cores max, so it's not going to beat 6 core X79 cpu's in multithreaded stuff. Haswell's chipset will have 2 more sata III ports though. Nothing is known about X89, not even if it will actually exist.

Yea, I think what you really need to decide is if you really need six cores. If you do then getting the 3930k now is the obvious choice. Unfortunately has well will only be a quad core and maybe 10% Max faster than ivy, clearly not enough to beat the 3930k in heavily threaded workloads.

If you only need 4 cores, seems a toss up, depending on how badly you need a desktop now. I had hoped haswell would be a major improvement in performance, but on the desktop it seems like a relatively small improvement for a tock.
