Advice Overclocking 650 Mhz - locks up on some programs

Hi all,

I have a PIII 650 Mhz 100 fsb which will run at 133 FSB on my 6163 pro, however, it locks up in some programmes I use at this speed.

How can I try and find out what is causing the lock ups?

Machine is

650 MHZ PIII FPGA in Sloket on Slot 1 MSI 6163 Pro.
128 Megs pc133 ( infineon - not sure of CAS rating ) How do I tell ??
ATI Rage pro AGP 8MB
Win2k OS Service Pack 1 - locks up on Win98Se also.
Drive - IBM 6.4 Gb (c)
Drive - IBM Deskstar 75GXP 46Gb (d) used for video capture
Golden Orb cooler + 486 fan on BX chip, all nice and cool circa 32 degrees
Added Direct X 8 but made no difference.

Runs Seti at high speed no problem at all. ( 6 hrs test )
Would like to get it working on 866 Mhz stable as it would improve render times.

have you tried bumping up the cpu voltage?

Yes I did up it to 1.70 but as I am not that courageous I did not push it further.

I can empathise with you but I would suggest you try up till a max of 1.8V before giving up. I use 1.75V myself! You may not be aware that the new stepping p3s,cCO, use a default voltage of 1.7V,the old cBO p3 1GHZ used 1.75V!

Well I hate to say this, but if increasing the voltage (or maybe the cooling) doesn't help, that may be all you can do.

Maybe back it off to 125 MHz and be stable and happy. That's 812 MHz, and that ain't bad.

Also, you need more RAM for use with Win 2K. Probably 256 MB. See this.

Interesting the article on RAM. I am contemplating another 128 megs as I am doing DV video editing.

I did a test rendering 40Gb of AVI to a mpeg file.

WIn2k took 3 secs less than the Win98 under the same setup.

So perhaps if I up the RAM, Win2K may shift faster propotionally, as they say it is more efficient on resources.
