Ogg is the only open format

wma>ogg>mp3

http://www.r3mix.net/ stuff is old ,mp3 doesnt evolve

listen to all the formats for yourself and then choose.

ogg dosent have portable support and also doesnt sound better than wma9 so its useless.
also never convert from one format to another ex. wma - mp3 mp3 - wma

--r3mix is old

--alt presets x is the standard

ogg @ lower bitrates > mp3s @ lower bitrates

bit for bit and transparencies, the lame --alt-presets kill OGG .. sorry .. head over to the hydrogenaudio forums for more info.

I use lossless WMA because I want my recordings to sound exactly like they did on CD. WMA is excellent in that respect because it still utilises VBR even if you select no compression.

For portables though I'd probably use MP3 since I don't know how good WMA support is on them.

However for the PC lossless WMA is definitely the way to go. HD space is a non-issue these days so why not make your recordings sound as good as possible?

Why WMA?

Easiest way (for CD->MP3) is CDex, but best way is EAC and a LAME encoder.

Why WMA - because I read WMA sounds better and/or takes up less space than mp3.

That's what Microsoft will tell you. They claim a 64kbit wma is as good as a 128kbit mp3. not true. Although ripping to WMA is far and away the easiest if you have a new version of WMP.

It sure is true for me. I load up WMA into my 64mb SD card for my Ipaq, and it takes up about half the space as an mp3... and even though it's encoded in lower bit, the quality is just as good as an mp3. And it's not just my hearing. I was skeptical at first as well, but there were enough people on the PDA forums to convince me to try, and now i'm a firm believer.

I was all set up with EAC+LAME MP3 and now I check back and people say use WMA...

Some of the MP3's I'm making with EAC are coming out with errors even tho the CD's aren't scratched.

With all this trouble I might as well get kazaa, but I never see high quality rips (256kbps) on there.

Don't give up on EAC/Lame yet. Those errors would be in any other format you try to use, but, the program won't tell you about them like EAC does
Are you using the cd drive that EAC recommends? It will test your drives at installation, and recommend the best one, but you might do better to use the other. Give that a try.
I find 256 is a nice balance betweeen gatting a little compression, and getting good quality too. Some will say you cannot tell after you get to 192, or even 160, but take a minute and rip one file at 128,192,256,320. Give them a good listen, and you'll know what to do.

WMA is a dirty ditry lie....
EAC + LAME as everyone else stated.

I would also like to agree that OGG owns, but due to the fact that I also have a DVD player and a Discman with MP3 support, that is what is keeping me stuck to MP3s... Otherwise OGG is far superious to MP3...

Make sure you run detect read featuers, examine c2 featuers, and also run autodetect read command. You will get problems if you are reading the drive the wrong way, also make sure u have digital extraction turned on in device manager, and make sure your aspi layer is working....

I use dBPowerAMP to convert it to ogg format @ 80kbps.
It sounds pretty good and requires less space on my PDA.

I just got a Nomad Jukebox 3 (40GB) for the amazing price of $219.95

Now I'm stuck trying to get 300+ CD's of music ripped using a PII 450 Mhz PC.

Will EAC+Lame do groups of files at once? (so I don't have to come back to the computer every 5 minutes)

This sounds like great advice, but I can't find the things you are mentioning.
Help! P.S. I have Win98

Look in the EAC menu, the one on the far left of the menu bar... All the setup options can be accessed there.

Ok I think I have EAC all set up... now I want it to fill in all of the ID3 tags for me.

I have it linked up to the freedb and it's automatically filling in the artist and song title for the file name, but it's not doing the ID3 tags.

what do I do?

Thanks

the only way EAC writes ID TAGS if it rips and encodes in one shot. If you rip (with just the WAV) function and then encode, it wont rip.

Encode after it rips the song and you should be ok (make sure you fill out the ID tags under Compression Options.
