Should I get this over other guns, or are there better guns out there for the buck?

Handguns I prefer

Looking for semi automatic and around $600 or less new.

Dan Wesson makes good ones, however I believe a lot of them come out of the factory with errors. The good thing is they are inexpensive, but you might get one with a couple problems (nothing that would kill you, just jamming and stuff). If you ship it to Dan Wesson they will fix it for free and pretty damn quickly too.

I have read articles and talked to gun enthusiasts who claim they have outshot expensive trophy guns.

1911 Replica - do you mean a functioning handgun that is a knock-off of a Colt or do you mean a"Replica" handgun - IE: A non-firing toy?

I think you mean 1911 clone.

Springfield Armory makes good 1911s for the cost conscious.

Years ago I purchsed a super cheapo knock off fabricated by Thompson, cost me less than $200, I would not recommend this fire arm to anyone wanting to hit the broadside of a barn LOL !

why is a 1911 a replica? i have owned 3 1911 of different manufactures and prefer them over any other guns. i use my 1911 for competition and class training...it all depends what you want to do with your gun and as their are many 1911 to choose from.

if you really want a 1911 why not get a colt? Also do you consider a 1991 a 1911?

Rock Island Armory sells a .45ACP 1911 available for $289 from ClassicArms.us If you're looking for a basic 1911, those fit the bill nicely.

Other good handguns for the value are CZ-75s, Springfield Armory XDs, EAA Witnesses, and S&W 4xxx and 5xxx series handguns. The two later can be found very low priced from CDNN's online catalog.

What will you be using this for?

I have a Para-Ordnance LDA 7.45. It's a really nice gun and I particularly like the long double action pull (which is about 3lbs and cocks the trigger each time so the hammer is never cocked with a chambered round). It is a single stack and cosmetically is almost identical to a 1911.

IIRC I paid about $700 for it though.

The Witness pistols are excellent for the money and are often overlooked. They are really clones of the CZ made by Tanfoglio.

Right now I'm trying to decide whether to buy a polymer Witness for ~$250 + shipping & FFL fee or a FN Hi Power in .40 S&W for $400 + shipping and FFL fee (both from CDNN).

The 9mm EAA would be a nice plinker, but the polished finish on the HP gives me a petrified forest in my pants.

Decisions decisions. :brokenheart:

Personally, I have a weakness for anything FN. The Hi Power in .40 is supposed to be a very sweet pistol.

Which reminds me....I've got another G1 FAL kit I should get started on.

Just an note - whenever somone says "replica" that usually infers knock off or a non functioning version.

Examples:

I have a ROLEX REPLICA for sale

I have a replica Van Gogh

Anyways, onto 1911's.....

Theres a lot out there.

Kimber makes a good gun, but the initial MSR's are high
Springfield makes a blase gun, a little lacking in the options if you ask me. Ditto for Rock Island.
Rock River makes a very nice gun, I have one myself and it's tops.
Para makes a nice gun too, I've seen SSP's in the 550 range.

If this is his first handgun, I think he'd be better off buying a lower end model over a more expensive one and spending the difference on ammo, range time, and instruction/safety classes if necessary.

If this is his first gun, I wouldnt reccomend a 1911 at all unless he wants to put a nice idiot mark on it.

That's kinda tough when looking at 1911s. Have u considered Kahr Arms ?

I have a Karh TP9 for a concealed carry weapon and I love it.

If you want specifically a .45 they have those also.

What purpose is this for? Carry? Recreation? Home Defense?

If it is for carry or home defense, go with a .45 and get Federal Personal Defense rounds.

If it for recreation, get a 9mm. The ammo is much cheaper.

Also if you want a carry gun, get one with a polymer frame as they are quite a bit lighter.

Another awesome handgun on the cheap is the Bersa Thunder380.
Small but not too small, ammo is inexpensive (.380 auto), and u can get then for about $230

No, it's not. I've bought plenty of 1911's at or under $600.

I've yet to see a high quality, trustworthy 1911 for under $600

Go to a gunshow sometime.

Several Springfield Armory models can be easily had for under $600. Even the MSRP on their GI model is less than $600
