I think you mean 1911 clone.
Springfield Armory makes good 1911s for the cost conscious.

Rock Island Armory sells a .45ACP 1911 available for $289 from ClassicArms.us If you're looking for a basic 1911, those fit the bill nicely.
Other good handguns for the value are CZ-75s, Springfield Armory XDs, EAA Witnesses, and S&W 4xxx and 5xxx series handguns. The two later can be found very low priced from CDNN's online catalog.
What will you be using this for?

The Witness pistols are excellent for the money and are often overlooked. They are really clones of the CZ made by Tanfoglio.

Right now I'm trying to decide whether to buy a polymer Witness for ~$250 + shipping & FFL fee or a FN Hi Power in .40 S&W for $400 + shipping and FFL fee (both from CDNN).
The 9mm EAA would be a nice plinker, but the polished finish on the HP gives me a petrified forest in my pants.
Decisions decisions. :brokenheart:

Just an note - whenever somone says "replica" that usually infers knock off or a non functioning version.
Examples:
I have a ROLEX REPLICA for sale
I have a replica Van Gogh
Anyways, onto 1911's.....
Theres a lot out there.
Kimber makes a good gun, but the initial MSR's are high
Springfield makes a blase gun, a little lacking in the options if you ask me. Ditto for Rock Island.
Rock River makes a very nice gun, I have one myself and it's tops.
Para makes a nice gun too, I've seen SSP's in the 550 range.

If this is his first handgun, I think he'd be better off buying a lower end model over a more expensive one and spending the difference on ammo, range time, and instruction/safety classes if necessary.

No, it's not. I've bought plenty of 1911's at or under $600.

I've yet to see a high quality, trustworthy 1911 for under $600
