What would you recommend for Computers? How is Navy boot camp?

Both are good for Computers and as for boot it has changed from 8 weeks with service week on the 5th week to 12 weeks and i'n not sure what week is service week. Thing is after boot you'd still have "A" school then if your lucky/good a "C" school before you'd even hit the fleet which is sweet. Just make sure you have a rate not ATD or what ever they are calling it now. A rate is your job i.e. I was a boiler tech (BT) so after boot I went to BT "A" school for 12 weeks before I went to my ship. ATD on the other hand is not a school and they will give you a line about you'll get to try out all the diff jobs on a ship then get to choose which is a lie you'll end up in deck and painting the ship for the next 18 months

I second the part about never, ever joining the Navy without signing up for a rating. If you go to the fleet without a rating, you are going to do the worst jobs on the ship and get promoted the slowest.

I'd suggest getting a degree first then join.

I was in the AF - I'd say it was a piece of cake when compared to what I've heard about the other 3 [army, navy, marines].
Basic Training - 30 min morning aerobics, day filled with "how can they screw with your mind", and a simple obstacle course [my guess they needed something physical].
Tech School = "college" dorm life, march to class, morning exercises.
Your assignment = 9-5 job with a uniform on - you'll probably be stuck in the dorms for awhile unless you want to pay to live off base or have a family. Air Force for me was 4 years of easy work [I was a nuke tech - so my job was limited to inside a fence with no chance of travel/combat].

Basic training is a little tougher now, but still easier than others I'd imagine.

I don't know if it's gotten tougher since you did it, but tech school sucks ass. Between marching and other crap basicly in class from 4:45 am to 6 pm. I was in Biloxi in the summer I suspect I had heat exhaustion maybe stroke several times. Jobs pretty close to 9-5 (7-4 for me) except extra crap tacked on that you have to put up with, but it's easy stuff and I like being here. The "college life" thing is what really got me; tech school is nothing like college. It's more like basic with alittle less physical activity.

Go Navy!

most important thing to realize if you go Navy, is you will be stationed on a ship (at some point)
ships go out into the ocean
the middle of the ocean
there are no malls or internet (limited email, but not surfing youtube 8 hours a day) or cable TV or non-Navy peoples out in the middle of the ocean

My cousin-in-law joined the Navy under the understanding that they would give her a position in the MP. She has spent the past 4 years living along the Mediterranean coast tooling around in little boats.

So basically, she got to be Paris Hilton with a gun.

The Marines are for bad asses
The Army is for fighters
The Air Farce is for women
The Navy is for homosexuals.

Go Air Force!

I'm currently in the AF and living in Italy... so don't think you won't travel, there's opportunity once you figure out how to volunteer for jobs in your career field. Speaking of which I'm thinking you want to go 3C0X1 they're the little computer monkeys that we send help desk tickets too to come work on our computers...

Actually... come to think of it I think the 3Cs just transformed* to 3D1X... something. I know I've just been moved over to 3D1X2 formerly being a 2E1X4. And I believe 3D1XX might be the new "computer" career fields. Crap I guess I'm a computer monkey now!

Just a note however, I've heard the wait to process through MEPS is going on 6 months+ for some career fields. And I'm thinking computers would be one of those jobs with a long wait behind it. I could be wrong, but given the current state of the economy I know there's been a sudden surge in enlistments.

If you've got any questions feel free to hit me up.

==note==
*transformed = consolidated
