Is there a reliable/affordable modular PSU out there? Would be nice if it was $100 or less. Thanks.

Actually if I am not overclocking do I even need 750watts for this system:

The system consists of 4 gigs ram
evga 8800 GTS 640MB Vram
AMD A64 X2 Dual Core 4400+ Running at 2.21GHZ
Raptor 160 gig sata hdd
Seagate 300gb sata hdd
DVD burner
The cpu has one of those monolithic thermaltake heatsink/fan combos (I think fan is 150mm something).

Thanks in advance.

Best price you'll get for a good 750W modular is $110, Antec TP-750:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371025
It has a $20 MIR that'll knock it down to $90, although I usually pass on these.

You're system as it is doesn't need more than 400W, so you can go with any modular psu from corsair/antec/enermax/seasonic that you like. Thermaltake/seventeam/OCZ have some good models as well, but also some not so great ones to avoid - read reviews on the particular model before purchase.

If you want affordable modular power supplies look at the OCZ ModXStream units, which are good deals with rebates lately. Like the others said, though, 400-500W tops.

I do agree with others.. do not put burden by giong after 750 Watt, 400 watts is quite good for your system

I think the 750watts was for sorta of future proofing my system, but I feel like if I upgrade it will be years, and years. For what I do this system will last a very long time. I mean the only game I am even remotely interested in is D3 and that is still 2 years out I think if not longer.

Judge it this way - if there's a chance you'll SLI or Crossfire two high-end cards (like HD 5850, 5870, GTX 285; probably $600+ total), then grab a 750w. If you generally stick to one GPU or would only consider SLI / Crossfire for upper-midrange cards, save some cash and get a quality 400-500w unit. Even then, you're leaving yourself some leeway for upgrades.

I just got this Seasonic X-750 supply. I got it because it's fully modular; every plug can be disconnected from the unit. Also Seasonic's reputation is nuclear-from-orbit proof, and it is very efficient based on numerous reviews.

ya, you do not need much power for that system. Corsair hx520 is a good one. I have one.

I just got mine the other day from Newegg. Last week, they had an additional $20 off with a Promo code. Snagged it for $69 AR.

Yeah I know - I had a note in my post that I removed about him being able to get it for $90 (70 w/ MIR) that night, but I left it out since I didn't think he would get it in time. It truly is a steal for 90, even more for 70  http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/766/7

And this is a place for another.....GOD NO!!!!

Agree. I wouldn't buy any ps from OCZ these days. Outside the fact that you play manufacturer roulette by buying one from OCZ (is that an FSP or Sirfa build?), I almost doubt OCZ will be in the power supply business a year from now, given the financial straits OCZ finds itself in these days. Of course, this doesn't touch on the huge numbers of refurbished units OCZ is dumping, large enough numbers of them that durability of their power supplies is really called into question.

That Antec TPN-750 is probably the best value overall, hands down, for a power supply these days. Seasonic built, great electrical output, 5 year warranty (and Antec will be around in 5 years to back the warranty)....what's not to like?

Another vote for the Antec TruePower New TP-750 750W. I got it a week ago from Newegg for $89.95 and there is a $20 rebate, so ~$70 total if I ever get it (not holding my breath).

you could get

Thermaltake Toughpower XT 750W Modular Power Supply for $119.99 with $25 MIB and junnyguru gave it a 9.5

here is the review for it
http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=171

Here is the score he give the psu

Performance (40% of the final score) - the last time I looked at a Thermaltake XT unit, it had a bit of a ripple problem, and was otherwise excellent performing in every other way. This unit seems to have effectively addressed that issue, even if it is still a rather long in the tooth Channel Well PSH design. It was rock solid stable, efficient, and had clean outputs. So, I'm going to add a point and a half to the score from the 850W model and give this unit a 9.5.

Functionality (20% of the final score) - here too, the XT 750W improved a little bit on big brother in that it didn't have the "wire stuck in heatsink" issue that model did. In all other ways, they're going to be identical. You get the same barrage of accessories here as you do on the 850W model, and more than enough modular cables to do the job. Now, if only the ATX cable had been sleeved up into the unit, I wouldn't have to pull off a half point. 9.5.

Value (30% of the final score) - Froogle tells me that Aerocooler is selling this very unit right now for $179.99. That's ten bucks more than the Corsair HX750 at Newegg, which is based on a newer and quite frankly better performing CWT platform. But, just take a look at Newegg's price on this unit - $124.99. That's looking a lot better, no? And look - there's even a rebate thing going on right now making the deal even sweeter. Now we're talking, Thermaltake - that's how you spell "value." 10.

Aesthetics (10% of the final score) - ugly. I'm sorry, that color does nothing for me. As was the case on the 850W though, I don't mind it too much, what with that big metal sticker on the side and all. 7.
