I used to tailgate (when I was 17) until I rammed someone from behind because of a sudden stop (a bus stopped in front of them). It was so not worth doing. "Young and stupid".

Its the only way to drive here in SoCal. If you leave gap between your car and the car in front of you, other cars will constantly be cutting in front of you thus forcing you slam on your brakes and/or slow down.

Also, I hate assholes that purposely drives slow in the far left lane. I had an asshole who actually tried to purposely cause an accident by constantly slamming on his brakes so he could extort money from me. I would have shot that guy (if I could)... car to car.

That's why I have my camera with me at all times and video Aholes like that.

It is awesome to see the expression on their face and usually get the finger from them when I show them the camera after I finally get to pass them.

Sadly I'm sure they don't learn.

same here (tailgating as a kid). i barely touched the other car (no damage), but it made me realize how important that buffer space is, especially when brand new cars can stop so fast and have ABS. you can't always count on being able to keep off that BMW's bumper if he jams the brakes, so you've just got to leave enough space to stop or swerve. at 70 MPH, the other car could be capable of stopping 30 feet shorter than you, and that's assuming you can modulate your brakes properly, and you hit the brakes the exact instant they do.

Five years ago I was driving an older Mercury Sable that I was planning to sell anyway. I wasn't having the greatest day to start with, and was tailgated by a dumbass like the OP. I hit the brake, he couldn't 'respond fast enough, and he totalled my car and his. Pretty nice insurance settlement.

Looking back, it was one of the best feelings I've ever had. I made the roadways safer in the long run and helped punish a lawbreaker, all at his expense.
