I learned it was two in a high school.

But ive always used one, and all the papers I have turned in so far at college havent been docked points for just using one.

I stick to one.

In elementary school, I was taught to use two spaces after each period that signified the end of a sentence. I thought that it was fairly stupid, myself, and never did it. In high school, the English teachers said that it was an antiquated practice that was no longer necessary using computers and modern typesets. They actively encouraged that we discard knowledge of using two spaces after periods.

Those of you that still use two spaces: why? Is it just because "it's always been done that way?"

as long as you don't mix it up, you won't piss any readers off with either. Microsoft Word automatically puts two.

I do it for the same reason I will never use the letter 'U' in a sentence in place of the word 'you'.

I do it for the same reason I capitalize the first letter of the word at the start of a sentence.

I do it because I am adamantly opposed to the ongoing degradation of the English language I witness on a daily basis.

I also do it because that's how I was taught growing up and I'm a tad anal about these sort of things.

Good reasons. They're remarkably similar to the reasons that I refuse to use two spaces.

It just occurred to me, if you use two spaces after every period, you're increasing the length of whatever you are writing by a full character per sentence. Provided you aren't using Hobbesian sentences with 37 semi-colons and countless run-ons, those characters add up. It begins to push your text onto new lines. Before you know it, those extra spaces are causing your paper to run onto additional sheets when it comes time to print it. You use extra sheets of paper, more trees have to be cut down, less carbon dioxide is broken down into oxygen through photosynthesis, and the global temperatures increase thanks to the greenhouse effect, causing ocean levels to rise, moving coastlines thousands of miles inland as the ice in the north pole melts, diverting the North Atlantic current and causing a new ice age to wash over Europe, killing billions.

The facts are clear; if you use two spaces after a period, you are guilty of the worst genocide in the history of the Universe.

Agreed. I am a professional proofreader and I ALWAYS remove extra spaces, as does everyone else at my place of work. They are not necessary when you're typing on a computer. It's an outdated practice, not a "lazy" or "kiddie" habit like some of you are implying. Though I guess, like so many parts of the English language, it's not technically "wrong," just a different way of doing things. I will at least contend that the extra space is not necessary. But if you happen to write a research paper and submit it to my company, I'll be removing all your extra spaces.

I'm actually quite surprised that there are so many more double-spacers than single-spacers here. I thought this was only something old people did.

Apparently you're not adamantly opposed to misuse of white space and the omission of the semicolon in a list. Get off your high horse.

I used to use two spaces, but after I noticed that MS Word cut my two spaces to one, I just got lazy and started doing one space.

Nitpicky, yes, but isn't that what grammar is all about?

No, he's from Canadia. They have weird rules of grammar there, like spelling ton and color with approximately 300 more letters than they need. In traditional British style, any punctuation falls outside the quotation marks rather than within them, the opposite of the American system.

Yeah, I've always had a problem with how that looks. I know technically it's correct, but it just looks strange, so I've never done it.

One space. It's a habit and I don't see the point of two spaces (and almost nobody ever notices).
