After removing virus, not detecting shortcuts

I just got finished scanning my computer and removing some virus. i restarted it, and now none of the icons on my desktop (or anywhere else) work. it brings up the "open with" box to select a program. i've tried looking at the properties to make sure the target path is to the right folder in the program files and it seems to be correct. any ideas on what went wrong? i don't have system restore active so i'm kinda out of luck there. i used superantispyware to get rid of the crap.

Sometimes after a virus has been removed it leaves behind some edits to the registry that need to be removed before shortcuts will work correctly again. Follow this:

Windows+R = Run command, type "regedit" without quotations, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows NT/Current Version/Image File Execution Options

In that folder I only have two files "DllNXOptions" and "iexplore.exe".

Delete any others you see and reboot. If this does not work it may be in another area of the registry:

Windows+R = Run command, type "regedit" without quotations, HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/.exe, highlight ".exe", in the body where the values are stored the top line may read: (default)/REG_SZ/secfile - If "secfile" is there right click the (default) line and "modify", change "secfile" value data to "exefile", click "ok" and reboot.

This should take care of you.

i went to the file that you said for the first suggestion, and there are about 50 folders in it. does that sound normal? i was expecting maybe 1 or 2 extra. also, i didn't have either of the ones you have on your computer. neither "DllNXOptions" or "iexplore.exe".
so i skipped and went to the second step, but that doesn't appear to be the problem. i just wanted to make sure before i delete all those folders. a couple of examples of what they are: "photohse.exe" "divx.dll" "AVSTE.dll" "javai.dll"

i got a screenshot but i don't think i am able to post it here.

Yeah smart move not deleting files. You can enable an advanced reply mode in the user control panel if you want to add pictures/ss.

After some searching this is what I found. Give this a shot and get back to me as I think this will take care of it.

2 . Copy BETWEEN these lines and paste into Notepad - Save as exefileFix.reg [to your desktop] - then Right
Click on it and MERGE - REBOOT

DO NOT COPY LINES
