plz help,my important files were gone!
I have a 1T external hard drive( my passport Western Digital) .yesterday i right click on drive in windows 7 my computer --> properties --> tools --> check now --> and i check both these boxes :
-Check Disk dialog box Automatically fix file system errors
-Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors
after about 2 hour, process finished.but when i go to my external hard drive. i just found 30 gb of my files and folder was remain and

other(about 900 gb!) were lost! and the free space of disk wasn't changed that maybe shows folder and files are not deleted.

why were the data deleted? Chkdsk tell nothing me when it completed! If data disappears it usually is because files are damaged and the

Chkdsk utility attempts to separate the damaged files out BUT there aren't any files or folders with such as these names "found.000" or

"*.chk" in my external hdd.( i remove check on hidden files)

note: i found my chkdsk log in event view in windows cp :
there ware a lot of records like this : Deleting orphan file record segment 60010.

i read some where that In the final chkdsk analysis, you need to have the disk directory and file structures reporting aligned with the sector

0 allocation table (or vice versa). is it really mean everything is gone?!

plz help to find prob and get my files back .

Dig through your File Explorer settings. I think it's folder options. It may be hiding system or hidden files from file explorer. It should display a FOUND folder. If your are lucky filenames are intact.

If not try Piriform's Recuva. Run it, but don't recover files, run it to view existing files in FOUND folder. From the sound of things though, this may be a beginning of a long journey.

i was checked all explorer setting related to showing hidden files or system files . but still can't find any folder with this name : FOUND. maybe after analysis by one data recovery soft(recuva) these "FOUND" appear.
so if it works and recuva find this folder, what should i do?

and also there is no guarantee that data recovery soft can restore all my files & folders ,i wanna to find if there is just one chance to recover my lost.
in the other hand, recover soft can't find deleted file with their path(or at least their name), i think maybe there is a way to using information provided in generated log file.( in event view in windows cp : there were a lot of records like this : Deleting orphan file record segment 60010.)

I wrote a blog on my company's website about why you should never run chkdsk on a drive that isn't backed up. This is a perfect example of why.

You can read the article here - http://www.recoveryforce.com/is-it-safe-to-run-chkdsk/

In short, chkdsk dropped any broken records from your MFT from what appears to be bad sectors. There is no reversing the damage caused to your file system and your best course of action is to take the drive to a data recovery professional before it completely crashes and you lose all your data.

If you wish to go it alone, then be sure to start by getting a full sector-by-sector clone and continue your file system recovery attempts on the clone, not the original failing drive.

Good luck!

You don't need data recovery software, yet. You first need to get a full sector-by-sector clone of the drive with a program that can work around bad sectors. The only software that I recommend, at this point is ddrescue. It can log the skipped sectors so that you can go back and retry them after the first pass is complete.

Yes, this.
Stop messing with the HD, and clone it, then use the CLONED HD to try to recover files. If you can't, then, take it to the pros, and shell out some big $$$.
