I enjoy the phone. it does a lot i want i to do. But i have to admit the GPS sucks ass.

Not only does it have me living in New Providence New jersey half the time but when the GPS does decide to work its roughly a mile off..

i have done a lot of searching on the internet about it and it seems this is a problem with Samsung phones. they put in very shitty GPS's.

I am slightly worried about using the navigation portion and it getting me lost.

My D2 was old and outdated but the GPS was rock solid ALL the time. not just when i would run programs like GPS status or GPS test. the gps will run great for about an hour after i run those.

It's not a problem with Smasung phones in general, it was a major issue with the Galaxy S but the S2 was fine and I hadn't heard of any issues with the S3 until now.

Probably a stupid question but have you checked the Location settings to make sure it is set to use both the mobile networks and GPS? Also is the issue that bad in Google Navigation or is it just a problem in other apps like the weather one?

I've used my SGS3 for nearly 2 months now.... I don't have any GPS issues. Weather/Navigation/etc all works fine. You *may* have a defective gps.

Sorry you're having trouble with your GPS.

It's been rock-solid for me. I'm out in Phoenix, AZ right now, able to navigate a city I'm completely unfamiliar with as if I lived here, simply due to the GPS being so reliable. Not any problem what-so-ever. Even better than my old DX which had excellent GPS.

So the SGS3 GPS works fine for about an hour after you run those apps? I'm not really sure what would cause this problem that then has a predictable but limited fix. Maybe a bad setting somewhere, or just the unit itself is bad?

I had big problems with GPS on an SGS1, but I have no problems whatsoever on an SGS2 and Galaxy Nexus.

You may have a faulty GPS in your phone, or service in your area may be suspect.

You haven't searched properly apparently.
GPS was a known problem with the Samsung Galaxy S series. Not so with their other phones.

People complaining about GPS problem on the Samsung Galaxy S III?
First time I've heard it.
/shrugs

Either you live where there are lots of trees, you fumbled with some settings, or your particular phone is defective.

I know this was a problem on some versions of SynergyROM, but I haven't heard about it from stock roms.

Take it back to your provider (if you got it from them) and demand an exchange. I wouldn't put up with something as needed as GPS not working for a minute. Demonstrate the problem for them and don't put up with any excuses. Whatever you do, I wouldn't mess with ROMing it before then though.

First two links are about the stock weather widget, which does indeed suck balls. Use something else.
The third link the guy had a faulty unit, he got it replaced.

I've had great results with the S3 GPS, it's way faster than my old S2 (and that wasn't that slow). The Glosnas support gives it a really large number of satellites to get a lock on.

In short either youre doing something wrong or your unit is faulty.

Which weather app are you using? Does google maps/nav show your position accurately? I think the gps just hands a set of coordinates to whatever app is asking for them, the app does whatever it is set up to do to interpret your location and put a name on it. If you are using the stock weather widget i think that it has some kinks to work out on how it decides where you are, or it is favoring the wireless network location over the gps. You could be getting on a tower that has its location marked in "whatever" town. I occasionally noticed it putting me in the next town, but a refresh would fix it. For the most part I know where my house is so it didn't really bug me.

For gps accuracy, i have no complaints at all. Used it quite a bit on a recent trip to Yellowstone and my phone had me within feet of where i was based on landmarks and a paper map for the entire trip.

Weather apps aren't the best judge. Some weather apps say I'm one town over, but if I go to maps, it shows where I am within 5ft which means that's a weather app problem not a GPS problem. I get 35ft locks within seconds even if I am inside at least 10ft from any windows. If you actually want to figure out which is the problem, download "GPS Test" and see how the accuracy is... if it's not under 100ft within 5-10 seconds I would get it exchanged.

I had to get my S2 exchanged for something else and they gave me one that would only lock to 500ft after 30 seconds... I made them swap it again.

Before you do this give the unit time to update the GPS data stored in the phone. If it hasnt been used for a while or was last used a distance from its present location its going to take a little time to get a fix.

use an app like gps status by eclipsim to check how well your gps is actually working.

also, go into location settings and enable/disable google location services like i said in your other thread.

Really? I find the gps on my sgs3 to be freaking awesome. I have never had a phone that locked onto 13 sats in 2 seconds before. Hell, I even get 4 sats in my semi-basement apartment with 20 floors above me. My sgs1 could never lock onto a sat but we all know how horid that was.

The gps on my wife's G3 and also our our friends G3 works great.

Now the reception suck the big one, but the gps works fine. You'll always know where you are, but don't expect to be able to make a phone call if you're anywhere near a fring area that you previous iphone or android worked great at.

Mine works most of the time, if yours isn't working every time you go to maps then Iw ould exchange it like other people are saying. On mine I have to occasionally go into gps status and clear and update agps, turning off and on gps sometimes fixes it too. But most of the time it works quickly and locks in within 10 seconds or less. FWIW I've owned a lot of android phones and an iphone 4 for a while and all of them fuck up sometimes with gps where it just can't find a lock unless you restart the phone or reset the gps. Motorola's phones were the best for me too, the droid x I had would get a lock to within 1m whereas my gs3 gets 3m at best.

Yeah the weather apps don't always use the actual GPS for your location. Many of them will use your network-based location, and if you're on wi-fi it can give you some funky results due to your ISP's location resolving to a NOC that can be several miles away.

If your location shows up properly in Maps, then there isn't a problem.
