Tax-wise the easy answer is that your legal residence is where YOU yourself deposit/pick up mail for daily business (paying cell phone bill, etc). Having parents pick up your mail in another state doesn't count. It is where you do your mailing. If a shipment was rushed to your typical sleeping location where would you ship it?

The long answer is more complex. The tax man can (and if necessary will) get phone records, meeting minutes, credit card statements, etc to see where you actually spent the most time.

My answer is it depends. In the military you maintain a state of record, and you go back to that state, if you desire, after retiring or you leave the military. It may also apply if you are a student. Every state has its own rules about this. Get ahold of a state license book to study up on it. Usually the Secretary of State handles this.

Some people also have residences in multiple states. Some people also work out of state and return every day and have to file taxes in two states. In most cases you file taxes in the state you live in as your primary residence. The state where you work collects state taxes, so you have to file in that state to determine how the state will handle your taxes. If you own a house or property you should file in the state you work in if you live there or not. They also are the ones that collect property tax. So if you or your bank is paying property tax there are multiple exemptions for that.
