tried to Google with no luck, but two questions

1. if I move to a new state permanently do I have to get a new license within a certain amount of time?

2. I just got a new job (NYC) and put down my parents` address (PA) since I didn't even know mine at the time (temporary sublet). How long do you have to live at a place for it to count as your primary residence? I'm worried about taxes

Yes. Check the department of licensing / motor vehicles website for your new state to find out how long you have to do it and what papers you need to bring. Most states will want proof of your address from phone, cable, etc. bills.

Yes. Even if you move in-state, you have to have your licence updated to reflect your current address. It's either 30 or 60 days.

I wonder what legally constitutes being a resident. Like right now I'm subletting an apartment so don't have a lease, phone/cable bill, etc. Do I even technically live in NY?

Is your current address in PA or NJ? If you're still living with your parents and your permanent address is in PA, then you can probably get away with not getting a new license.

You mean 'Do I have to?" or "Do I have to legally?".

I know people who haven't lived in the state indicated on their license for 10+ years.

Just lie and say you're only visiting until a cop is smart enough to take down your information.

Yeah, you do. Most states it's pretty simple. Here I just had to take the sign test, check my vision and give them $28 when I moved here.

It's okay, we understand, the mustard yellow plate grows on you after a while.

Or do you not have to get new plate along with the driver's license ? :hmm:

If you're working in NYC, and living in NYC, and get caught avoiding paying tax as a NY resident, you're going to get screwed. Not only will you get screwed, but the people doing the screwing enjoy screwing & will smack you over the driver's license issue as well.

You could always just do what I did and hang onto your old license and be too lazy to get one from your new home state, then have to scramble when you realize that when you buy a car, you have to register that car. When you register that car, you need a license, and you cannot register your car in PA with a NJ drivers license. That was fun.

Or you could just save yourself all those headaches and get yourself a NY state DL.

Here in FL if you accept employment you must change your license over, these laws might vary by state, IDK..

The Sheriff around here will send a car now and then to check the license plates to see if anyone from out of state is working there..

The DMV says you have 30 days to change your registration and license over to the new state you live in. As long as the previous address on your license is valid, you can take your time switching over to the new state. When i moved from NJ to NY, I waited till my registration expired to avoid paying the new state fees as long as possible.

I did this with texas. Of course, there aren't any state income taxes with texas, so I wasn't avoiding state taxes.

IIRC, the two states I've changed to (California and Illinois) gave you a 30 day window to change your license over but that window is not really enforced in any way AFAIK. I had enough to do after moving to each place that I didn't get to the DMV until two or three months after I had moved.

If you have a fishing license for state A, and you move to state B, your fishing license for state A is still valid in state A if you only want to fish in state A.

Your fishing license is not valid in state B. If you want to fish in state B, you would need to get a fishing license for state B from the DNR.

Read original post, ignored all replies. Original post does not specify which kind of license so naturally, I assumed he meant fishing license.
