Aftermarket cooling for a non-reference (apparently) XFX 6950

Specifically, this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150523

I paid ~$40 to discover that, contrary to what the Google has told me, this Arctic Cooling Twin Turbo Pro:

http://www.arctic.ac/en/p/cooling/vga/22/accelero-twin-turbo-pro.html?c=2182

Doesn't work. Yes, I'm aware that it's not specifically listed as compatible but I did find lots of forum posts and what have you out there saying that it DID work with the 6950.

Guess not.

I was hoping to find something in a similar price range - because paying ~80 for a GPU HSF doesn't really do it for me.

What're your thoughts everyone?

are you sure you weren't mistaking the Twin Turbo Pro for the Twin Turbo II (which IS compatible with the 6950, according to Arctic Cooling's site)? i'm not sure why you didn't just get the Twin Turbo II, the Accelero XTREME Plus, or the Accelero XTREME Plus II in the first place, since they're all specifically compatible with the 6950...nenvertheless, i've never tried fitting a TTP to a 6950, so unfortunately i don't have an answer to your question...

FWIW, i got a Twin Turbo Pro (for my 5870) from Mwave.com for just under $40 shipped...did you really pay ~$80 for yours?

Yep, the TTP goes for 30$ at mwave, the xtreme version goes for around 50$.

If you get the accelero be extremely careful. Many people have ruined their GPU's by DIY'ing with the accelero.

I hope to god the 7xxx series aren't as noisy as the caymens. I despise how loud my crossfire setup gets at full load.

I must have been - they look pretty similar. I'm also concerned, though, about the non-referenceness of my card.

I got mine from Mwave too (I even went and picked it up - that place is super janky) for $40.

The $80 remark was in reference to the Accelero Xtreme - which is right around that price:

and that's a completely justifiable concern...while i've seen Arctic Cooling coolers work on non-reference 6950's, i've never done an install myself...nor do i know for sure if any aftermarket coolers will work with your specific non-reference card. i suppose the last thing you want to do in a situation like this is make an assumption, but given that there are far more non-reference 6950's on the market than there are reference 6950's (kind of the opposite situation with the 5870), i think there's a good chance that the Twin Turbo II, the Accelero XTREME Plus, or the Accelero XTREME Plus II would work with your 6950.

Hmm $40 for a GPU cooler is doable for me - but will the Accelero TWIN TURBO Pro work on my non-reference Sapphire 5870? Specifically, the SAPPHIRE 100281-3SR Radeon HD 5870

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102883

i unfortunately don't know if the TTP will work with a non-reference 5870. i will say that the TTP works like a charm with this particular Sapphire 5870, but its a reference design:

They have? I've never really heard of anyone doing that.

As an accelero owner, I have to say that I can't fathom how a person could ruin their GPU with this cooler any more so than they could kill it with any other 3rd party GPU.

That, and I have never heard of anyone killing their GPU because they used an Accelero. This is intriguing to me. How on earth did they?

I mean physically, I've installed one myself, more than once, how could anyone kill their GPU with this thing? (outside the obvious derp moves like throwing it at the GPU like a baseball and stuff)

You may want to look at the TDP rating when looking at aftermarket coolers. For example, that Accelero can only handle ~120W according to the spec and your GPU consumes over 200W.

I bought the incorrect model because I am illiterate

It's really easy and fast to destroy an xfx 6950 with the TTPRO, i bought the revised model with the harder mounting plate and still i had to bend it anyway, temps stayed teh same, tried every single method of applying thermal paste and 2 different brands, taking apart the card 5 or 6 times total until I returned it for store credit because my card was peaking at 110c no oc. Sure helped my idle though brought it down 8 degrees! After reapplying stock hsf temps now peak at 83c during a heavy game of bf3, idle 52, wiht 955/1444 clocks on the 6950. Dunno what to buy now thinking about forgetting gpu coolers.

dude, if you had to bend any part of the cooling or mounting apparatus, then it probably wasn't designed to fit the 6950 in the first place. the OP even mentioned that the TT Pro is not specifically on the 6950 compatibility list. he also mentioned that he ended up with the wrong model, and probably meant to get the TT II, which is compatible w/ the 6950. i'm sure your temps under load sucked b/c 1) the cooler probably wasn't seated correctly, and 2) the TT Pro is only rated to dissipate 120W, far less than a 6950 produces (under a non-arbitrary load of course, like during gaming or compute apps).

@ sunny 129

which arctic cooler would you get for a sapphire xtreme 5850 non reference card?

i can't really answer that, as i'm sure every manufacturer's non-reference 5850 has a slightly different cooler, and quite possibly a slightly different PCB as well...which means that mounting holes may not line up from card to card. so first you'd have to specify which non-reference 5850 you're speaking of, and secondly you'd have to find someone who's experimented w/ that card and aftermarket coolers. i can't comment, as i've never played w/ a 5850 of any sort.
