Age of Conan: 9800gx2 or GTX280?

Every review that I have seen has placed the 9800gx2 above the gtx280.

I am a gamer. I am using a X48 board and generally don't care to SLI. I have the 9800gx2 (which is SLI on one card) but I can and will upgrade to a single GTX-280 if there is a performance increase in Age of Conan.

As a note: SLI doesn't really improve performance on AOC.

My system.
x48 board (gigabyte)
e8400 (@3.4ghz)
4gb ram
Corsair HX1000w psu
BenQ 2400w (24" monitor - 19x12 res)


So the question I have is. Which would give me better performance for Age of Conan?

No doubt the GTX280 after some driver tweaks, now over at hardocp is an article about AoC and how its playable with max settings even on a 8800GT.

I read that article and it seemed a bit.. um.. disingenious.


They said that they compared 4 cards
GTX280
GTX260
9800gx2
9800gtx

But then they only listed results for
GTX280 - blue line
GTX260 - sandy brown line
9800gtx - red line

9800gx2 .... ?????? No result listed.

It may be marginally adequate, but certainly not good. I have an 8800GTX and consider it acceptable, but not too good.

I'm waiting for the highend ATI card in August. Then deciding between it, the 280 GTX, and 9800GX2.

I got 130+ fps(open areas)/150+ dungeons/80+ fps city with GT SLI at 1440 by 900 before going up to a bigger monitor. My system is fine at 1920x1200. The only time it dips below 30 is when Im in the larger cities. I am sure it would dip in massive PvP battles, but I have yet to partake in one of those. I seriously doubt any card out that can take a massive PvP battle at highest settings across the board.

Though, when the DX10 version is finally released, I dont think its going to play that well on GTs.

The safest bet for the DX10 version is the 4870 or GTX 260/280.

Im debating on stepping up to dual 9800 GTX+s or dual GTX 260s. (Basically spending $100 or $400).

With an 8800GTX at 1920x1200 with everything maxed (except AA at 4x), I get ~18-30fps.
