Age of Conan

Continuing my MMO magical mystery tour last night I deleted my lvl 17 hunter in WoW (because I am definitely not paying to get past 20), and decided to fire up a character in Age of Conan, another old-schooler that has gone F2P and is on steam.

I have to say this is a pretty damn engaging game. The visuals are really very good with everything cranked up. The combat is good enough, maybe even a little better than that. I'm still on the newbie island of Tortage, but so far I think I would play this for awhile. So there must be something I'm about to run into that explains why this game never really made it big.

It really isnt.

It just a very differnt combat system, so it ll take along time to get really used to. Once you are you ll love the combat system though.

The probably was always the fact that the balanceing in the game is horrible.
And when it first went out it didnt have much endgame content.

Now many years later, it should have more content.
Maybe they actually found out how to balance the pvp too <.<

** game still has balance issues:
premium players have "Alternative Advancement" (skill up, buff up, even after max level), which F2p players dont.

So this isnt the game you should play for PvP unless your willing to get premium mode, or just stay forever below level cap on purpose, for the sake of more even pvp.

Bought at release,i felt i got my moneys worth didnt sub for extra time.messed around with the free trial a few times.just to add the game was a buggy mess at release.

Oh, and as for WoW, maybe I misread. I thought you had to upgrade your account to get past lvl 20.

There are two quest lines to get off the island in Conan. Both require you to upgrade your account. There's a large common land area but, there are other lands you cant travel to without buying the new content. It may have changed by now but, the game engine definitely penalized amd cards.

You are right that you can not play for free beyond lvl 20 in wow. Of the two, wow is a much better written game.

Things I liked about AoC:
Character looked bad ass from the start
No kill rat quests
More mature content, even quests like kill the cock handler
World looked pretty good
The bad:
Grinding quests because that was the only option
Horses that were advertised to be useful in combat but in reality it was just faster travel
Broken promises from developer, see previous drunken brawling
Super linear maps which made the zones appear super small

The game was fun, I enjoyed playing a more mature game. I'm tired of sparkleponies and other lame crap like that. Sorry there's no leprechauns Boston, hopefully in Camelot Unchained.

I remember most of it. There was an NPC named "Cock Handler" (possibly due to poor translation). He walked around a town in the game, he owed another NPC some money so he hires you to kill his prized cock (in this case cock=his best rooster). I remember smashing it with a hammer and then faced the cock handler wrath. For the level you are at he is a major bad ass, fortunately I had a group and we barely managed to take him down.
I do believe they later changed that quest, so current players may never see it.

You have to upgrade to get past level 20, but buying the base game is only $5 (if on sale, and it's on sale *a lot*) and you can get up to level 85 plus you get a month free with the base game.

Yeah, that's pretty cheap. I actually found WoW's world as charming as ever, but its gotten really cartoony. The textures when you get up close to things are terrible, and as I mentioned before I don't think looks are everything but it's sort of bad enough to be distracting.

I'm sort of intrigued by Age of Conan at the moment. I think a lot of opinions are based on what it used to be like. The more I play it, so far, the more fun it is, and the world is gorgeous.

Was this before it went f2p ("unchained" as they call it) and just had a trial? I got to level 80 on Conan with a f2p account.

For endgame you definitely had to go premium.. but most of the game was open except for some lands and dungeons.

The problem is the endgame isnt free as well.

If you want best gear, you ll need to go premium.

If you want to pvp, on equal footing to others, you ll need Alternative Advancement, so you ll need to go premium.


Other than that the game is fine, you get the long grind and leveling up experiance for free.

I played AoC at release and really enjoyed for about 6-7 months. Leveling was way too fast and you didn't really need to group. The initial end game content was fairly fun, but there just wasn't enough of it. It just seemed liked I burned through the game too fast.

AOC has been quite good for a long time, 99% of the hate is from the first 6 months. There is a reason pretty much every RPG site who looks at games later has said AOC is the "most improved", "most fun" that nobody knows since it had a crap launch. Yes i could quote and link sites.. but haters hate no matter what you present to them and google is easy to use. Its still not what a great MMORPG should be (none are.. yet).. but its pretty good.

The only thing I don't like about AOC so far is that the world seems to be organized as a bunch of linked areas. I'm in Tortage, and I can go to the three or four instances, but I don't know how I get out to the wider world. I'm assuming I have to level off Tortage through the destiny quest or whatever. I'd prefer just being dumped into a large open world and being left to fend for myself. Seems like every game gets a piece of what I like right, and screws up something else .
