AGP cards...

I was willing to replace my Radeon 9800 pro at the end of next year when the new technologies around Next-Generation will be available to PC.

The only problem is that I am still on AGP and I begin to see a real drop by ATI and Nvidia.

Will there be any new AGP cards since the real jump between PCI-x and AGP are still marginal?

No everything is moving quite quickly to PCIe (PCI-X is not the same as PCI Express/PCIe)

Both ATI and Nvidia's newest cards are PCIe only, and it doesn't seem they plan to release AGP versions of them. You could still upgrade to like an X850, which will be a nice boost over your 9800Pro.

You need to determine if your current AGP system has a fast-enough CPU to handle a top-end AGP card, or if both aspects simply warrant getting a PCI-E MB/CPU/Memory along with a video card. It's MUCH cheaper to go ahead and upgrade the AGP video card if your CPU is still fairly strong (say 3.0GHz or faster), but if you've got a sub-2.0GHz system, you might want to consider upgrading the whole thing to a PCI-E format MB.

Bottom line, I'd say if your system is 3.0GHz or faster, just get the fastest AGP card you can afford and save a bunch of dough. If however, your CPU on your current system is also creaking, it's probably just best to upgrade the entire system.

I bought my new system a little over a year ago and decided to stick with an AGP motherboard since I was still satisfied with the performance of my Radeon 9600 Pro (which was about a year old itself by then).

I recently was asked to build a new workstation for the company I work for and planned to get a new video card and swap it out with my old 9600 (not a big deal, I even told my boss about it, he has done it himself hehe). My plan hit a snag when the company building the PC for us notified my that they didn't have any AGP-compatible motherboards for Pentium D processors.

So I figured out the hard way: AGP is on it's last legs and most "bang-for-the-buck" cards seem to be PCI-Express these days.

I got a a new system 6 month old.

I play most game on high definition even with this card.

I will wait until next year to see if I should change the mobo...

Damn it... that whole crap is only a way to make money...

Why would I do that since I play most of my game at the maximum setting I could get with my VP930b?

The only one until now I wasn't able to run at max was Doom3.

I still didn't try out Quake 4, but from what I heard, the real challenge is Call of Duty 2.

Well, from the stats I saw, I will be able to play this easily with most of the eye candy.

Of course, I can't take HDR into the picture since my card doesn't support it.

i guess your idea of maximum settings doesn't include fsaa+aa or any decent resolutions

If you're able to (or planning to) spend over $400 for a video card, you should switch to a PCI-E motherboard.

If not, it looks like there are some new AGP cards coming out that should be pretty damn impressive.

Nah, we are a small outfit with less than 10 PCs, each suited to a specific need. Mostly typical office work, one for AutoCAD and this new one is for me to use for all our graphic design/promotional needs such as website, print ads, video editing, etc. I wanted an X2, but the supplier my company uses doesn't have them yet so I decided to settle for a Pentium D.

agp is ok for now if you buy the card you want that fits ur system. its no bottleneck.

I play my game in 1280X1024 due to my LCD screen like I said before. I simply put 2X or 4X AA instead of 8 or 16... would you tell me the need to play at 16 when you're running at 1280?

Like I said, the only game I can't push that much is Doom 3 and it most likely due because it's an ATI card.

AGP is dying very fast.

If you need to uprade to a platform to slowly upgrade get the Asrock 939Dual-Sata2. It will allow you to keep your 9800 pro and get a PCI-express card later.
