Hi,

I've just finished building the following:

A64 (socket 939) 3200+
Abit AV8
1gb Mushkin blue pc3200
AIW Radeon 9800 Pro
Audigy2 ZS
Samsung DVD+RW
WD Raptor 74gb

Before OC'ing, this thing is already smoking compared to my old system, but I am having a problem. When playing HL2, after 1-2 minutes, the screen locks up and I get an error message about the vidcard not being able to read from the memory. I've tried reseating the video card, reinstalling the drivers, and I've updated to the most recent 4n1 drivers for the mobo. Even a clean XP install and driver reinstall hasn't helped.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated... If you need more system info to offer advice, just ask!

Is the error saying it can not read from video memory or system memory? If system than I would take one stick out and swap each in turn to see if it is a RAM issue. You could also run memtest on the RAM as well. If it is a video card issue the best thing to try is find another ATI card that you can swap in to test. And is this only happening in HL2?

Oh, and BTW what PSU (brand/wattage) do you own?

The Power supply is 450watt, came with this case http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=11-200-023&depa=0

I actually did try to take the audigy out at one point, and used the on-board audio. Same issue occured...

I will try swapping the ram sticks tonight after work... If the error keeps popping up, I'll do a better job of posting exactly what the error message says.

You asked if this was just happening with HL2. Since I just got the parts this past weekend, HL2 is the only game I've had a chance to install. I also have BFV, Far Cry, Call of Duty...etc, that I can install and see what happens.

BTW, Sandra benchmarks are working fine, and 3dmark 03 ran to completion without error...

If it turns out to be an issue with HL2 then I would try to reinstall it.

yeah, i'd say system memory. I get it once in a while with certain apps. I backed my ram down a bit (cas) and it seemed to do the trick.

It just happened before this post while running nothing more than a Explorer window...I'm starting to think RAM issues...

Try running your memory at 2T instead of 1T command rate. I've seen two machines with that same message where that solved the problem. Alternatively you could try backing off of timings but with overclocked A64 systems I've found that many don't run 1T stable.

Ok, I tried swapping out my RAM sticks, and using them one at a time. Funny thing, individually, each worked flawlessly. Then I installed both togethor again, and now it's running just fine.

I can only think that I have to be the moron who didn't make sure his ram sticks were fully seated !!!

Thanks for your help, especially the guy who told me to switch my RAM around!
