My current system is an XP 3200+ OC'd to 2.4, 1024MB DDR 400, Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe, Radeon 9800 Pro, Antec Basiq430 PSU.

Is there anything at all I can upgrade without bottlenecking? Mostly, I'd like to upgrade the video card (fan is failing).

Save your money for a new system.
Prices on agp cards are insane, you'd have to invest almost as much for just a decent card as you would for the base of a new system (mobo+cpu).
Besides, that athlon would REALLY bottleneck most anything you threw in there.

The XP3200+ isn't that worthless.

Here at eBay.de, they change the owner for 100€uros, don't know how it is in the US, though...

The problem with newer AGP cards is that they don't work very well or at all.
With an nForce, don't even think about Windows 7!
The possibility that that doesn't work is very high...

But my point is that $80 can ALMOST net you an athlon II/785 combo that even with just the integrated graphics will still outperform the old setup in every way. The OP could then save some more pennies for a modern discrete card later and be far ahead for it. Maybe even with the profits from selling the old system.

Don't forget that ddr2 prices are going through the roof!

Meh, I've been deliberating on putting together a ~$500 build based on X2 550...

Just wondering if there's any possible way I can squeeze more performance out of this one.

hah look at my sig.

I've come to the conclusion I need a new system. Even with integrated graphics on a 780g mobo you'd be moving up. And you'd have a platform that will be good for years to come. I'd recommend going for AM3 socket motherboard.

Just curious. Johnny what do do on that 9800pro system?
You havent gamed on it in years correct?

I just built my daughter a nice Athlon 2 box with the integrated graphics to play the Sims 3.

I don't think the integrated 785 graphics are any better then a 6800 series are they Yowen?

Honestly, if you need a new card don't go past a 7600GT/X1650 because your CPU won't deal with anything faster unles you play games that are extremely GPU bound like most FPS's.

You can prob find a good used HD 2600 Pro AGP card for arround $30 - $40 shipped and that would be roughly like a 6800GT I believe while consuming less power.

It would be nice if you would post what games you play/intend to play.

he has an XP 3200 which is a bit older and slower than your setup. really something that old is a waste for modern gaming.

Yeah, but its better than the 9800pro he has...

What games are you hoping to be able to play, I guess in some cases just a gpu will do the trick, but I still wouldn't invest in that system...

I remember when I bought a 9800 Pro and flashed it and thought I was bad ass

I miss computer gaming. I only got out of it as no room for a desk.

I got the ok to put a machine in the bedroom and use the Monitor for Videos too. I just don't got the money right now.

I play Warcraft 3 FT, Fable, Half Life 2, Sim City 4, Civilization 4, Far Cry...

But yeah, no new games. Not for years. :|

I recently put my system into a Storm Scout case - how's that for a polished turd?

Not bad at all!

Although I do have a PS3 now... the new system would mostly be for Matlab and CAD - this one for internet and family use.

Nice, almost exactly the same except I have two 80GB Seagates in RAID 0.

Cool story here:

I bought that exact same chip OEM before eventually buying the 3200+, but when it came from Tiger, several pins were bent. That's a no-no in my book when it cost $700. It took almost 2 months to get my money back from them.

Or he can go x1950 AGP .

I believe the fastest AGP slot card. gl

The fastest card is the HD 3850 and the HD 4670. But with his CPU, I think that anything faster than the X800XT will be CPU bound. So just get a decent midrage DX10 card like the ones here and enjoy.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161237 HD 3650 128-Bit BUS <<Lowest power consumption of all and as fast as the HD 2600XT, and cheaper

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161208 HD 2600XT Time proven

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150433 HD 4650 faster than the HD 3650 and the HD 2600XT and consumes slighly more power.
