Nvidia plans DirectX 10 cards for AGP slot

G84 goes Geforce 8600xx AGP

By Fuad Abazovic: Thursday 22 February 2007, 12:14
NVIDIA'S GEFORCE 7600 GS, its AGP card, will get a new follower, cleverly codenamed G84 AGP.

This card will be a Direct X 10 chip aimed at AGP upgrade market, as you have not been able to buy new AGP systems for a while now.

It is an interesting choice as but shows the value of this legacy market. The card is scheduled for April and this means that AGP upgrade market will get a DirectX 10 after all. ...CONTINUED

I'm probably going to get one of those

*runs and hide from the horde of rich kids who wants to lynch me because i won't upgrade to PCI-E instead aka a complete system overhaul*

There's still a lot of gamers around with AGP-based PC's for gaming purposes. In fact I wonder ... if PCI-Express represents even half of the PC gaming community, does it ? PCI-E is still relatively new. There has to be money to be made with AGP consumers still.

Sounds good to me. I have a Shuttle with an AGP slot. I can play the latest games at full resolution and max settings on my 6800GT. I would certainly upgrade to a DX10 card when the time is right. I have no reason to upgrade the motherboard/case.

AGP SUX!

Have we even saturated the AGP 4X bus or the AGP 8X bus yet with a single chip / card solution?

Exactly why we should continue enjoying AGP until at least PCIe 2.0 is available along with other actual system improvements.

PCIe 1.x SUX!

but what kind of system with an AGP slot have a use for this card? Seems like it would be a huge bottleneck and not get near full use out of the card.

and the cost to produce AGP cards that are inevitably passed on to PCI-E users is immortal as well.

Not necessarily... they aren't going to be as wildly powerful as the 8800s are. And you get the bonus of dx10. So that means when some games come along that are dx10 only, the agp users can still play them. Not at the highest quality, but play them nonetheless.

hmmm, I wonder if performance of the AGP 8600 will be considerably better than the X1950 series.

If it is then it could be a good upgrade for high end A64 or C2D AGP users.

Not to burst anyones bubbles but... AGP just got shot by nVidia.

http://www.vr-zone.com/?i=4704

According to our sources, there will not be any AGP versions for GeForce 8 series because simply it can't support. Therefore all DX10 G80, G84 and G86 cards will be PCI Express based. Also NVIDIA has not revealed the official marketing name for G84 and G86 yet but there will be 2 SKUs for G84 and one SKU for G86 at launch. G84GTS (G84-300) and G84GT (G84-400) are slated for launch in April while G86 (G86-300) will launch later in May. Interesting, G86-300 is 128-bit like the G84 while the rest of the G86 variants are 64-bit.

Haha, Fuad should not be allowed internet access.

Time to finally go PCI-E folks... Yes, yes, I know, cold dead hands.

Just sell the whole system and build yourself a new rig. I go to a 4 year university, pay rent, pay bills, drink lots of alcohol and smoke cigarettes while working 20 hours a week. I found a way to go PCI-E, so I dont wanna hear the lame rich kid excuse.

Mow some lawns, spend your tax returns, get a job, get a Xbox. I just dont get why AGP users are so unwilling to update their platform, but are incredibly eager to waste $250 on a new AGP card every upgrade cycle.

You're going to have to overhaul your system anyways, so why not just skip a video card or two and actually do it instead of throwing your money in a fire and burning it.

Actually, at that point PCI-e will suck...AGP will be an ancient commodity...one in which I still partake.

AGP is not dead, and there was no reason to go to PCI-e other than SLI and Cross-fire. All you suckers bought new MOBO's and CPU's for nothing.

Yeah, I call BS. Utter and complete BS. My X1900XTX can't even run every game at 1680x1050 and max settings.

No kidding ... When I was using a 6800GT/NForce 3 based system I had a really tough time playing any new game above 1024x768 & Oblivion for example became a slide-show at that resolution in outdoor fight scenes. It got a lot better when I upgraded to my X1900XTX/NForce 4 system which allowed 1280x1024 with max settings (& still a few slowdowns), but it wasn't until I got my current 8800GTX/2.8ghx A64 based system that I was really able to crank the settings to maximum with impunity right up to 1920x1200.

Oh Well. I was looking foward to having a decent AGP card to stick in my uber gaming rig. I really wanted to push things to the max by playing my games at 800 x 600 with everything on max quality. JK. :lol

I guess it would have been nice to have something that would probably be cooler, use less power than the x1950pro AGP I now have in my Shuttle HTPC.

we all thought that the 7800GS would be the last high end AGP card, then a year later ATI pulled the X1950PRO and now the X1950XT out of their bag for AGP....I wonder what R600 and it variants have waiting for us (AGP users that is), we may see a AGP DX10 part yet. *fingers crossed*

There won't be 8300 and 8600's only if the HSI bridge is not compatible. Otherwise the cores are reportedly compatible with previous board designs so it is not a beeg deal for AIB's to make them even if there isn't a reference design for a particular model -witness the 7600 GT from Leadtek, Pine/XFX and Palit. So while a 256-bit 512MB 8600 whatever may be a bit much to expect, a 128-bit with modest improvements over the previous generation may not be too "pie in teh sky". Some competition for the X1950 Pro & XT would be nice anyway.
