I've been lucky in that almost always with a large group of friends they've been great, stand-up folks, and the biggest "problem" we've had is having too much money thrown into the pot, to where it ends up being a 40% tip on a HUGE bill and people are trying to force money back on other people who are simply refusing to take it so that the waiter/waitress gets a freaking bonanza.

Everyone's happy, nobody feels slighted, and the waitron gets lucky for once.

I had to stand behind a fucking lady in LOWES today after a great day at dog park when I was trying to return my extra package of styrofoam from building cat shelters during our 20 degree cold snap here (S. Florida)

She already had 4 receipts stapled together for returns. She was returning an outdoor light she uses to light her Menorah each year...said it caught fire and was the third one she bought that did the same. She had it all in parts, sticking out of the box which was also torn apart. nothing was black, nothing looked burned. She insisted he'd have to get in there and smell it.

In the end she started screamed she was the customer and wanted cash not a credit or "this worthless stores' card".

They opened a new line and did my return, still perfectly wrapped and no blemishes. All for my $9.52 refunded to my card.

Stores do this because they pay a processing fee for your credit card when you buy it and when you return it. If they give you store credit, they don't need to pay Visa or Mastercard's bullshit processing fee :biggrin:

There is no better way to buzzkill an enjoyable evening with friends than to count the pennies.

bill + tip / # of people = what you owe. I'm lucky that all my friends make enough money to careless about who got extra appetizers or drinks. My wife's group of friends on the other hand love to penny pinch and I hate going out to dinner with them because of it.

I usually order a few appetizers for the table on my tab and share with everyone just to keep that crap from happening.

Your mentality is the reason why I wouldn't associate myself with you beyond a simple acquaintance. There's a difference between not arguing over a dollar or two every time you go out and being suckered into paying for a cheap person repeatedly. If your mentality is you're going to take advantage of me because I don't want to make a big deal out of $2, I simply won't go out to eat with you anymore.

I'd rather pay a few bucks more than to have my friends cover for my bill and my friends are the same way which is why it works out. If you're going to be cheap about it, you won't be invited to our get togethers.

That being said, when we have large groups of people and I'm not close friends with them, we generally just split the check. I'd still leave an extra tip in case anyone else in my group stiffs the waiter. It is their livelihood after all. Is it necessary? No, but put yourself in their shoes and tell me you wouldn't be pissed if someone pulled that stunt in the OP and you were the waiter.
