So yea, I let my friend watch over my place while I was out of town. I told him that he needed to turn on the back of the computer in order to turn on the computer. I meant the ps, but I guess he assumed it was the power surge which was also right behind the computer. When I came back and tried to start my computer up, it stalls out at the windows load screen(the one with the little bar that scrolls from left to right). I have tried everything (safemode, safemode w/ network, safemode w/ command prompt <-- all of these just make the system loop around.. , start up last good configuration, and start up windows regularly.) They all seem to do the same thing, either stall out or loop around back to where I started from. Does anybody know whats wrong? I was guessing its the harddrive... but im not too sure. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks guys!

Set the first boot device in the bios to CD and boot from the XP CD, then hit R for the recovery console when prompted and use the command chkdsk /r/f, if it doesn't find anything wrong try the command fixboot, and if needed fixMBR. If none of that does it then download and run the HDD manufacturer's diagnostic software.

If/when you do get it to boot up make certain to do a full virus scan, ad and spyware scans

Had something of the same thing happen to me, after days and days and many reformats, changing of hardware it all came down to the memory. I pulled a good stick out of another computer and started with a new install of XP and no more hang ups or loop backs. Now if I would have tried this before all the formats, I would have been in better shape. So maybe try another stick of mem.

Is there a way to update bios if the comp doesnt even load up? Also, I have not installed or added any new hardware... even if i did, it was working before I left town. Thanks.

The computer worked fine with the mem set up that its at now. Just for kicks i removed 1 of them to see if it would load up. Surely enough it didnt... =( .. thanks for the help though.

You pulled one stick and left the other in? Now try vice versa...pull stick 2 and leave 1 in. Mem goes bad sometimes and this does sound like a mem prob. good luck.

dont just try to pull out one pull out all and try with a good stick in, one that is in a computer that is working with no hang up, also like another persons said try to switch the order of them. do it the cheep way, no need to go and buy a new stick unless you know that this is the problem.

What ever happens good luck in trying to get it fixed.
