Hey,

Been following the new releases as I'm looking to upgrade later this year.

Dumb question that might not really have an answer: when did third-party/aftermarket cards come to be known as "AIB" instead? I understand that these things just kind of happen, but it's not a particularly descriptive term and is actually less specific than the old terminology. As someone who only does this kind of research part time, it seems like a misued silly term.

Oh well, just showing my age I guess. *shakes cane*

It's when random people on the internet started using words, soon became a trend, such as lol, WTF, FYI et al.
Saves them a bunch of time & headache, the latter's for anyone who's not well versed with internet jargons

I wondered that after I used the term itself & was contemplating an edit.

It's obviously shortened from "AIB partner" or some such, but since it's an abbreviation of laymens terms I count it as less annoying as the stupid "p" everyone writes after one component of their resolution.

You have a point tho, and even AIB partner is less precise than "custom" or "aftermarket". Consider me converted.

AIB = Add-In-Board. I think from the days when adding a coprocessor (e.g. GPU) on a card was the new thing

It just wasnt used very often. Probably because, in those days, it was just assumed that all gpus were AIBs.

I think that's the point... all PCB based everything which isn't on the motherboard is an AIB, tho generally they mean those which plug directly into it. So we're talking about differentiating the reference design from others, which is convoluted by how reference designs are produced by "AIB partners".

I don't know about a "new thing". It was common to have to buy a sound card, network card, graphics card, and maybe a PCI modem or extra serial/parallel ports as well.

I think it's mainly because both NV and ATI used to manufacture their own PCB/cooler on nearly all graphics cards, until they shifted to just designing the chips.

It's kind of weird. "AIB" is being used to denote 3rd party non-reference hardware. Since "AIB" stands for add-in board, it doesn't make any sense to have the acronym just refer to non-reference designs. I was looking through the RX480 thread and people are not getting the just released versions in favor of waiting for RX480 AIB. Uhm, they're all AIB (add-in boards)! There are no non-AIB RX480 at this point (ie it's not in an APU or soldered on the motherboard).

The term is supposed to be AIB Partner (that's what they call EVGAs and Sapphires of the world). It should be AIBP but people just shortened it to AIB.

It just seems stupid. Might as well just shorten it to A.

I can't stand the new wording... "Add In Board"... Reference designs are Add In Boards also... Dumbing down of the terminology.

In a TV context, ####p made some sense, though it doesn't anymore. When CRT TVs existed, the best of them could do 1080i (I'm pretty sure of that) and 1080 TV broadcasts are still interlaced. I had the last, great Sony CRT TV and it did 1080i.

Now, in a PC monitor context, ####i is just silly. Interlaced monitors haven't been manufactured in... basically forever. My first monitor (that I actually paid for with my very own money) did 1024x768 interlaced (and 800x600 progressive) but that was in 1992.

that's what happens.

AIB partner custom cards
AIB partner cards
AIB cards.
AIB

because... people. Eventually nobody knows what the other is talking about.

This is actually very true. I didn't even know what AIB stood for, and I built my first PC in 2006. I had guessed that the "A" stood for aftermarket. Couldn't figure the "IB" part out though.

The fools in their eagerness to ration keystrokes have managed reduce Add In Board Partner to only 3 letters while simultaneously dropping the most descriptive word in the phrase.

If I was mayor the town charter would be updated to read "From this day forth, the use of AIB to describe 3rd party products shall hence be changed to readeth partner"
