AIM through another server?

Hi Techies,

Do any of you know a site or server or way of using aim through another server besides directly through aim's servers? The reason I'm asking is because I need AIM to communicate with some people at work, but because a lot of the things are secure, the IT office has recommended not using AIM and so they monitor computers to make sure that we're not on AIM. If you have any suggestions or ideas I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,
Mike

You could go through a proxy, but I don't know of any AIM proxies. You might be able to go through some free public proxy, but you'll have to do some research on Google.

This site has free proxies, but then how would I go about connecting to aim through them?

Couple of ways you may be able to accomplish this

1. Don't use AIM, use java version
2. Don't use AIM, use trillian, GAIM, or one of the other clients.
3. Install a Jabber server, externally and configure AIM support. Install Jabber client on your local machine to connect to external Jabber server.

Depending on how the network is setup, they could be blocking the IP addy, the DNS name, the port, or the exe name that is requesting a connection (or any combination I've stated).

Yeah...I was actually thinking about using trillian earlier because I used to use that at home, but then I wasn't sure if that still connects to the aim server. Do you know if it does? Also since I'm on another computer, if I want to transfer all of my aim buddies would I have to go on the older computer and transfer some files over to this computer or can I import the buddies list from the aim server or something?

Thanks,
Mike

trillian will still ultimately connect to the aim servers so if they are blocking traffic to those servers, you won't be able to connect. that normally is not the way admins block access to aim, and it should be possible to either proxy the traffic or use a different executable.

the aim servers do keep track of your buddy list, so you shouldn't need to export them. if you really want to though, there is a way in aim to save your buddy list to a file that can be reimported later.

Yeah looks like trillian didn't work so they must be blocking the aim servers and not allowing us to connect to them. Does anyone know how I would go about connecting to aim through a proxy server? I've never done this before.

Thanks,
Mike

Here's a thought, if you just need it to communicate with a few folks at work, why not try yahoo messenger or msn messenger and see if those are blocked.

An email we got a few weeks ago told us that all of those instant messengers would be blocked, but thanks for the suggestion.

If the admins tell you not to use it, don't use it. They can install a jabber server internally to help keep things secure.
